Should school children take part-time jobs?
Editor: Today our topic is part-time jobs. Are they good for school children or not?
Headmaster: Certainly not. Children have got two full-time jobs already: growing up and going to school. Part-time jobs make them so tired that they fall asleep in class.
Mrs. Barnes: I agree. I know school hours are short, but there’s homework as well, and children need a lot of sleep.
Mr. Barnes: Young children perhaps, but some boys stay at school until they’re eighteen or nineteen. A part-time job can’t harm them. In fact, it’s good
for them. They earn their pocket - money instead of asking their parents
for it. And they see something of the world outside school. Businessman: You’re quite right. Boys learn a lot from a part-time job. And we mustn’t forget that some families need the extra money. If the pupils didn’t take part-time jobs they couldn’t stay at school.

Sandra Garratt is a better clothing designer than she is a business-woman.
Garratt had a brilliant idea: to design women’s clothes that are all the same size and would fit anyone.
Garratt earned a lot of money from her idea.
At first, Garratt designed clothes for a large company. Because she was not well paid, she scrubbed floors and cleaned toilets to help make money for her family.
She borrowed money to open a shop to sell the one-size-fits-all clothing she was designing. Later, she sold part of her company to get enough money to open shops all over the U.S.
Women liked Garratt’s styles. The clothes were inexpensive and
convenient to buy because women didn’t have to try them on before buying them. Garratt’s companies sold hundreds of millions of dollars worth of clothes every year.
But then she allowed other people to take control of the clothing company she started. She didn’t make good business deals. The people she borrowed money from now control the companies she started, and they are earning billions.
Garratt says she has more good ideas for business. But next time, she says, she won’t let success at business slip away from her.

When the early settlers, especially the English, arrived in the New World. The hardships and dangers awaiting them were totally unexpected. Had it not been for some friendly Indians, the settlers never would have survived the terrible winters. They knew nothing about planting crops, hunting animals, building sod houses, or making clothing from animal skins. Life in England had been much simpler, and this new life was not like what the Spanish explorers had reported.
The settlers did introduce iron tools, muskets for hunting, domesticated animals, and political ways to the Indians. In exchange, the settlers learned to build canoes for water transportation and snowshoes and toboggans for winter traveling. The Indians also taught them to blaze trails through the forest, to hunt large animals and trap smaller ones, and to spear fish in the lakes and streams.
The natives also introduced to the settlers foods such as turkey , corn, squash, beans, and pumpkin. Everything possible was done in order to make their new settlement resemble the homes they had left behind.

By March this year, we shall have raised enough money, we hope, to buy the equipment for the Youth Club. When we have raised the money, we are planning to go back to the Youth Club leaders in order to discover exactly what is needed most. Plans have been made for the Book Sale which will be held on 15th February. This means that many of us will be spending the first two weeks of February collecting books. The event is likely to be held in the Town Hall. If there are problems here, however, we hope that other Club members might come up with some alternative suggestions.
As we are proposing to sponsor a student from Africa on a three-month language course in this country, we also intend to hold a Charity Dance in spring. Such event are apt to(可能)be difficult to organize , so all members of the Club are invited to contribute or help in any way they can.
The moment I was asked if we could possibly help in some way with the new Club for the Disabled, I said yes. As Chairman, I am bound (肯定) to say that this is the sort of social work many Club members would like to do, other than simply raising money. We are therefore planning to ask members if they can perhaps help out on one Saturday every month.
Finally, by January next year the Club will have been going for twenty years, and the Committee intend to mark this anniversary with some kind of dinner, a dance or a party. We have already been offered (unofficially) the use of the dance hall at ‘ The Forest Hotel’. However, we shall be devoting one of our meeting in the near future to a full discussion on the form of the event, etc. Any suggestions will be welcome.
