Communication technologies are far from equal when it comes to conveying the truth.A study shows lies in phone conversations are more than they are in emails. The fact that emails are automatically recorded and can come back to haunt(困扰)you appears to be the key to the finding.

Jeff Hancock of Cornell University in Ithaca,New York, asked 30 students to keep a communication diary for a week.In it they noted the number of conversations or email exchanges they had lasted more than 10 minutes.and confessed to how many lies they told. Hancock then worked out the number of lies per conversation for each medium. He found that lies made up 14 percent of emails,21 percent of instant messages,27 percent of face-to-face interactions and an astonishing 37 percent of phone calls.

Ed Viesturs grew up in Rockford,Illinois, where the tallest thing on the horizon was the water tower. But on Thursday, Viesturs became the only American to climb to the top of the world's 14 highest mountains.

His last hike was up Mount Annapurna,in Asia's snow-capped Himalayas. At 26,545 feet, its peak is the 10th highest in the world. It is the mountain that inspired him to start climbing.“It tends to be the trickiest, the most dangerous,”said Viesturs, “There's no simple way to climb it.There are threatening avalanches(雪崩)and ice falls that protect the mountain.”

The pioneering climber talks about mountains as if they were living creatures that should be treated with respect.“You have to use all of your senses, all of your abilities to see if the mountain will let you climb it,”said Viesturs.“If we have the patience and the respect, and if we're here at the right time, under the right circumstances, they allow us to go up,and allow us to come down.”

What's next for a man who can't stop climbing? “I'm going to hug my wife and kids and kind of kick back and enjoy the summer.”says Viesturs. But for a man who's climbed the world's 14 tallest mountains, he will probably soon set off on yet another adventure.

Although hurricane season doesn't begin until June 1,a Pacific stonn has already struck. El Salvador, which was ruined by a Caribbean storm in 1995,was hit by Hurricane“Adrian”on Friday. This is the first Pacific-born hurricane to ever reach land in this Central American country. Some 14,000 people left from the western coast of El Salvador. The storm weakened as it

“Adrian”is the first Pacific storm of the season. It reported maximum(最大的)continuous winds of 75 miles per hour, the minimum strength of a hurricane.A Gategory 3 hurricane,Adrian also caused damage and flooding in Honduras. Last year, six of nine hurricanes reached Category 3 strength or higher.Four of those hit Florida within a six-week period.Altogether,Hurricanes“Charley”, “Frances”, “Ivan”,and “Jeanne”caused more than MYM40 billion in damage in the Sunshine State.

Some years ago industries had more freedom than they have noW,and they did not need to be as careful as they must today. They did not need to Worry a lot about the safety of the new products that they developed. They did not have to pay much attention to the health and safety of the people who worked for them.Often new products were dangerous for the people who used them;often conditions in the work place had very bad effects on the health of the workers.

Of course sometimes there were real disasters which attracted the attention of governments and which showed the need for chanses. Also scientists who were doing research into the health of workers sometimes produced information which governments could not ignore. At such times, there inquiries into the causes of the disasters or the problems.New safety rules were often introduced as a result of these inquities;however, the new rules came too late to protect the people who died or who became seriously ill.

Today many governments have special departments which protect customers and workers. In the U.S.,for example, there is a depamnent which tests new airplanes and gives warnings about possible problems. It also makes the rules that aircraft producers must follow.Another department controls the foods and drugs that companies sell.A third department looks at the places where people work, and then reports any companies that are breaking the laws which protect the health and safety of workers.Of course, new government departments and new laws cannot prevent every accident or illness, but they are having some good results. Our work places are safer and cleaner than before. The planes and cars which we use for travel are better.Producers are thinking more about the safety and health of the people who buy and use their products.

第一节:任务型阅读(满分10分)

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后图表中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。每空一词(满分10分)

Traditionally, many people believe they are supposed to drink eight glasses of water a day, or about two liters. Why? Because that is what they have been told all their life. But a recent medical report offers some different advice. Experts suggest people should obey their bodies; they should drink as much water as they feel like drinking.

The report says most healthy people meet their daily needs for liquid by letting thirst be their guide. The report is from the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academies. This organization provides scientific and technical advice to the government and the public.

The report contains some general suggestions. The experts say women should get about two-point-seven liters of water daily. Men should get about three-point-seven liters. But wait —in each case that is more than eight glasses.

There is one important difference. The report does not tell people how many glasses of water to drink. In fact, the experts say it may be impossible to know how many glasses are needed to meet these guidelines. This is because the daily water requirement can include the water content in foods.

As you might expect, the Institute of Medicine says people need to drink more water when they do hard labor. The same is true of those who live in the hot climate. Depending on heat and activity, people could need two times as much water as others do.

大作文:(30分)

Dear Paul,

I'm in trouble now. I'm writing to tell you my problem which has troubled me for a long time. It is the relationship between my mother and me. My mother is a university professor, who works very hard. She is strict with me, but she is so busy with her work that she finds little time to talk

to me. I love her and I do well in my studies, but I still feel a little afraid of her because she loses her temper easily. I don't know how to communicate with her. Maybe it's because we have seldom sat down and exchanged our feelings and thoughts. I hope we can know more about each other and understand each other better. I do hope we'll be closer. what can I do ?

Yours sincerely,
