The teacher said, “Veena, you have no manners; you have entered the office without knocking on the door.” Veena was a top student but was too proud of herself. Without saying sorry, she came out of the office.

In the evening, she complained to her father about what happened to her. Veena’s father decided to teach her what good manners mean. He asked her to go with him.

Before leaving, he told Veena’s mother where he was going and asked whether she wanted something from the market. After coming out of the house, Veena’s father softly closed the door behind him. Then both of them went to the reservation (预定) office. Veena’s father was to collect the ticket that he had reserved. He stopped in front of the door of the office and asked if he could come inside. Ranit Mishori is a family medicine doctor. She said colds are more common in winter, but not because of low temperatures. The cold weather just means people stay inside more. “People tend to gather together and the way the common cold virus is spread from one person to another is through handshakes, sneezing, or coughing on one another,” she said.

Adults usually get two to three colds a year. Children are likely to catch four or five. Dr Mishori said some people erroneously believe they can become resistant(抵抗的) to colds. “There are about two hundred different viruses that cause the common cold. People think that once they get infected one time, they will develop immunity (免疫力) for the rest of their life. This is not true.”

Dr Mishori said there are ways to feel better sooner after getting a cold. “So if you get a cold, you should start taking about two grams of vitamin C a day, there is evidence that it shortens the number of days that you are suffering.” She said honey can also help. “There is increased evidence that it helps shorten the length of the common cold sometimes even by two or three days.”

Dr Mishori said honey seems to be especially effective in children with colds. But the Agriculture Department said, “never to feed honey to babies less than one year old.” It said even honey in prepared foods may make them very sick.

Have you ever heard the old saying “feed a cold, starve a fever”? Dr Mishori said this is not necessarily a good guideline to follow. She said if you have a cold but do not feel hungry, then don’t eat. “But you have to drink a lot and you can drink water, tea or anything that gets fluids ( 流体) into your body. That’s very important.”

25.What does the underlined word “erroneously” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A. Interestingly.

B. Surprisingly

B. Taking vitamin C helps us recover from a cold.

C. Honey is better than medicine to help recover from a cold.

D. Honey helps recover from a cold because it’s rich in vitamin C.

27. If you want to recover from a cold sooner, what should you do?

A. Eat even if you are full.

B. Avoid drinking juices.

C. Drink much water.

D. Avoid drinking tea.

28. This passage was written to ______.

A. tell us how to be a doctor.

B. tell us how to cure the common cold

C. tell us how to avoid the common cold

D. help us know the common cold better

C

When I studied in college, I spent a term abroad at the University of Copenhagen, in Denmark. The experience abroad offered something a bit more exciting than that in my state college. The language was not a problem. Everyone in Denmark speaks English very well. The country is safe and the educational opportunities are excellent.

At first I stayed in a house of a single woman, who was housing two American students. The woman provided more supervision (监督)than my own parents, so I left the home and went to live in the dormitory. To my surprise, I found most of the American students had moved into the dorms for the same reason.

Once I settled in the dorm, my focus was getting to know Copenhagen and the local social scene. The American students all arrived with bright colored jackets to protect them from the cold Danish weather, so the Danes could easily pick us out of the crowd.

I arrived in January. The weather was cold and I was happy with my jacket. The Danes walked everywhere and it was easy to get around in the city, but it did take some time to get used to the cold weather there. While there is only about five hours of daylight in winter, there is as much as 18 hours of daylight in the middle of summer. For this reason, I chose to stay there at the end of the term to really enjoy this wonderful city in the warmer weather.

While the educational opportunities at the University of Copenhagen were great, they were not the major focus for most of the students I knew. The professors seemed to understand the need of the foreign students, so they were not very strict with us. Grades were not a problem or a stress. We had enough spare time to travel around. This may be different from other programs or universities.

29.The author communicated easily with others in Denmark because _____.

A.lots of American students stayed there

B.the Danes treated the author very well

C.all the local people spoke English well

D.the Danes liked American students’ language.

30.The author didn’t return hom e immediately after the term came to an end so as to _____.

A.get to know more about the local people

B.learn more history about the country

C.travel around Europe with others

D.enjoy Copenhagen in the warmer weather

31.It can be inferred from the passage that the American students _____.

A.didn’t want to work hard at their lessons

B.preferred to get more freedom.

C.didn’t get on well with the Danish people

D.didn’t want to live with their parents

32.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.The author’s purpose of studying in Denmark.

B.The author’s experience of studying in Denmark.

C.The importance of studying in foreign countries.

D.The habits of the local people in Denmark.

The following are the top animal moms.

Octopuses

The University of Michigan’s Museum of Zoology said that a mother octopus lays about 50,000 eggs. For about 300 days, she stays with the eggs, cleans them and protects them. She does not leave to feed herself. Not surprisingly, this animal mom dies as soon as the eggs are hatched. (孵化)

Crocodiles

A crocodile mother builds a nest, which she guards for over two months. When the eggs are ready to hatch, the young babies call out to their mother. The mother will dig them out and help them hatch. She then carries them gently in her mouth down to the water, and guards them for several months until they learn to hunt on their own.

Bats

Scientists explain that bats become animal moms by hanging their heads up in a cave. They catch the young bats before they can fall to the deadly ground below and envelope them in their pouches. (育儿袋). Bat moms may carry babies with them for the first few days. As the little bats get bigger and heavier, bat moms help them hang on the wall of their caves and the moms often return to check and feed their babies. This process continues for about three months until the babies grow up and are able to fly on their own.

Koalas

A koala baby climbs into its mother’s pouch after it was born. It stays there for five months for its development. When the little koala is between five and eight months old, it leaves the pouch for short periods of time but returns for safety. Once it is too big to return to the pouch, it will climb onto its mother’s back and ride there until it is about 12 months old.

33. What do we learn about octopus mothers?

A.They lay thousands of eggs at one time.

B.They die of hunger after their eggs are hatched.

C.They and their husbands take care of the eggs in turn.

D.They feed their babies for a long time after they were born.

34. Bat mothers keep their babies in their pouches so as to _____.

A. feed them anytime they want to

B. teach them how to fly on their own

C. teach them how to hunt on their own

D. protect them from falling onto the ground

35. A koala baby leaves its mom’s pouch for the first time______.

A. immediately after it was born

B. when it is about one year old

C. in about five months after it was born

D. in at least eight months after it was born

参考范文:

Dear editor,

Nowadays many people in our community are fond of keeping pets. But there are many problems caused by the situation. I would like to tell you my thoughts about it.

A large number of people in our community keep small dogs, cats, and birds as pets, and still others prefer to keep violent animals like Tibetan Mastiffs. As a result, our community is no longer quiet and safe. Noise like the dog bark at midnight often drives us crazy. The waste left by various pets in public places can always make you not feel like eating anything for a few days. Some young children are often frightened or have even been bitten by the violent Tibetan Mastiffs.

I think keeping small and cute animals is good for our health, but I hate it when the

pet-owners do not care about whether their pets are polluting the environment or affecting others’lives.

Yours faithfully

Li Hua
