第三部分:阅读理解

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。A

The Leaning Tower of Piss has gone against the laws of gravity for seven and a half centuries . Every year , on June 19th , a professor from the University of Pisa climbs to the bell tower and measures the increase in the slant (倾斜) with special instruments . And every year the professor makes the same report : the tower has leaned a bit —about an inch more . Last summer (the year of 2004), the 125—foot —high tower was leaning an incredible 15 feet out of line . Scientists say that unless a way is found to stop the slant , the tower will collapse in less than 80 years .

The tower is leaning because the soft soil of Pisa will not support it . Its foundation is sinking into the soil at an angle , causing the tower to lean .Since a slight shake could make the foundation loose , the ringing of the tower’s bells was forbidden in 1959 . And trucks are not allowed to pass in the neighborhood of the tower for this same reason .

There is one word that is on the lips of Americans , day and night , “Sorry”.

One time as I was walking on the street , a young man ran by hurriedly , brushing against my handbag . Even as he continued on his way , he turned back and said “sorry” to me . Even in a rush , he didn’t forget to apologize .

One day , after I bought some apples , the salesman was giving me the change , but I wasn’t ready for it , and a coin dropped on the ground, “I’m sorry ,” he said while bending down to pick it up . I was puzzled —why would he apologize when it was my fault ?

Another time , I stepped on a man’s foot in an escalator . At the same time , we both said “sorry” . I thought it interesting : was it really necessary for him apologize ? Later on , an American friend explained to me that according to the American ideas, the escalator is public place which everyone should be able to stand in . After someone occupies a position in the escalator , making it difficult for someone else to find a place to stand in , isn’t it necessary to express an apology ?

During my stay in America , I gradually realized that when friction (摩擦) occurs in daily life , Americans don’t care much about who is responsible . If someone is troubled , a “sorry”is always necessary . Even if the other person is hurt , the “sorry”would cool tempers . Perhaps this is why I never saw anyone quarreling on the buses , subways or streets in America .

40.When I was walking in the street , ____ .

A.a young man wanted to rob me of my bag

B.a young man ran by and wanted to brush my bag

C.a young man said sorry to me for touching my bag

D.a young man came hurriedly to help me with my bag

41.When the salesman gave me the change , _____

A.I purposely didn’t want to accept it from the salesman

B.the salesman purposely didn’t want to pass it to me

C.I was slower to accept it than the salesman to give it to me

D.the salesman was slower to give it to me than I could accept it

42.The man on whose feet I stepped apologized to me because ____ .

A.the escalator is a public place B.the man was very afraid of me

C.the “sorry”said to me was for everyone

D.there wasn’t enough room to get my feet in

43.In this passage , the author seems to feel _____ the Americans’“sorry”.

A.angry with B.disappointed with

C.interested in D.approving of

This is a rather strange story but it is quite true . In December 1996, a burglar broke into a golf club in a small town . When the police arrived to investigate , they found an unusual clue (线索)—a piece of cheese with a bite-mark in it . The burglar had gone into the kitchen , and had eaten some food there . Then he had stolen some cigarettes and a little money .

The policeman in charge of the case guessed that the burglar was a local man . He thought that professional thieves would not bother to break into a golf club . They would know there was not much worth stealing in such a place . He made enquiries in the town and asked three suspects to come to the police station . When he questioned them about the burglary , they all denied stealing in the club . The policeman then gave each man a piece of cheese and asked him to bite it . He took the pieces of the cheese to a dentist and asked him to compare the bite —marks with that in the piece of cheese found at the golf club . Then the dentist said the bite—mark made by one of

the suspects was the same as that in the piece of cheese at the scene of the burglary . The policeman set free two of the suspects and questioned the third one . At first the man claimed that he was innocent . The policeman knew that the man was lying , so he encouraged him to talk until he began to contradict himself . Then the policeman told him about the bite—marks and the man had to admit his stealing .

46.The three suspects were given a piece of cheese each because_____.

A.a very important clue was a piece of cheese with a bite –mark

B.all the suspects denied they had stolen in the local club

C.in this way the policeman could ask the dentist for help

D.in this way the suspect was likely to be found out

47.The policeman can be best described as ____ .

A.very clever B.rather strict C.hard-working D.warm-hearted

D

We can make mistakes at any age . Some mistakes we make are about money . But most mistakes are about people . “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?” “When I got that great job , did Jim really feel good about it , as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?” “And Paul—why didn’t I pick up that he was unfriendly just because I had a car ?” When we look back , doubts like these can make us feel bad . But when we look back , it’s too late .

Why do we go wrong about our friends —or our enemies ?Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning . And if we don’t really listen , we miss the feeling behind the words . Suppose someone tells you , “You’re a lucky dog.” Is he really on your side? If he says, “You’re a lucky guy” or “You’re a lucky gal”, that’s being friendly . But “lucky dog”? There’s a bit of envy in those words . Maybe he doesn’t see it himself . But bringing in the word “dog” puts you down a little . What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck .

“Just think of all t he things you have to be thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another . It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole . But is he ? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought t hat your problem isn’t important . It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night .

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking . Do his words fit the way he looks ?Does what he says agree with the tone of voice ? His posture ? The look in his eyes ? Stop and think .The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake .

48.In the 1st paragraph , the writer recalls some things that happened between some friends and they_____ .

A.think it was a mistake to have broken up with their girl friends

B.feel happy , thinking of how nice their friends were to them in the past

C.feel very sorry that their friends didn’t help them and let them down

D.feel they may not have “read”their friends’true feeling correctly 49.In this passage , the writer tries to tell us how to ____ .

A.avoid mistakes about money and our friends

B.avoid mistakes in understanding what people tell us

C.keep people friendly without trusting them any more

D.“size up”people in a more scientific and meaningful way

50.While we are listening to a person , the important thing for us is _____

A.to check his words against his manner , tone of voice and posture

B.to notice his tone of voice , his posture , and the look in his eyes

C.to listen to how he pronounces his words in front of you

D.not to believe what he says in any situation or at any time

Dear Editor ,

I’m a midde school student . I hear that a power station will be built near Mt . Yunxia .

a place of interest . We know the power station will provide us with plenty of power and as a result , the local economy will develop rapidly , but many citizens and I are against the plan . To build the power station ,many people will have to move away and a great number of trees will have to be cut down . What’s worse, once the scenery of Mt . Yunxia is destroyed , it can never be restored . therefore , this plan is not good for protecting the enviroment . We suggest the city government should think over this plan .

Yours faithfully ,

Li Ping
