NaB 3O 5·0.5H 2O and NH 4NaB 6O 10:Two Cluster Open Frameworks with Chiral Quartz and Achiral Primitive Cubic Nets Constructed from Oxo Boron Cluster Building Units

Introduction

The search for new open-framework inorganic oxide ma-terials remains at the forefront of synthetic materials chem-istry because of their interesting architectures and emerging applications in separation and catalysis.[1–3]Up to now,a large number of porous inorganic frameworks such as phosphates,[4]phosphites,[5]sulfates,[6]germanates,[7]and borates [8]have been reported.Among these reported open-framework solids,borates are of great interest because B can be three and four coordinate to O atoms to form different polyborate anions,such as [B 3O 3(OH)4]–,[B 4O 5(OH)4]2–,[B 6O 11(OH)2]6–,[B 8O 10(OH)6]2–,[B 11O 22]11–,[B 14O 20(OH)6]4–,and [B 18O 36]18–[9–11]The com-bination of these B–O clusters and different metal ions (M)with B–O–M bonds can generate open frameworks with large pores through different synthetic approaches.[12–16]For example,Nazar and co-workers obtained a new cobalt

common structural features contain the oxoboron cluster building units,B 3O 7and B 6O 13cluster units for 1and 2,in which the B 3O 7and B 6O 13clusters act as 4-and 6-connected nodes to further link each other,resulting in chiral qtz and achiral pcu nets,respectively.

borate with a tunnel structure consisting of [B 3O 7]5–and [B 4O 9]6–units through a high-temperature solid-state reac-tion.[12]Under low-temperature boric acid flux reactions,Albrecht-Schmitt and co-workers prepared a porous tho-rium borate (denoted NDTB-1)with an unusual supertetra-hedral 3D cationic framework containing crownlike [B 10O 24]18–groups.[13]We have made considerable efforts to study the hydro-/solvothermal synthesis of metal borates and have made great advances in the systems of organic amines,inorganic cations,and chiral metal complexes tem-plated open-framework aluminoborates and germanium borates by incorporating different borate clusters.[15–16]

Recently,the connection of cluster building units in the same framework has been proven to be an effective way to obtain a diversity of open-framework inorganic solids with large surface areas.[7,17]For example,Ge–O cluster building units can be linked to each other through O atoms to form mesoporous germanates.[7]Oxo boron clusters contain active hydroxy groups,which may act as the main building blocks to construct various extended structures with only B–O–B bonds by condensation reactions with the elimi-nation of water molecules under suitable synthetic condi-tions.In addition,oxo boron cluster open frameworks may exhibit lower densities and chiral structures because boron is the lightest trivalent element and planar borate rings usu-ally show asymmetric electronic distributions.
