Part C:

To play their music well, jazz musicians don't really need to know a lot about the rules of harmonics and rhythm. Of course they might have a knowledge of both harmony and rhythm. But that kind of knowledge isn't what makes them good jazz musicians. What does make them good is having an intuitive feeling for how the music works. For artists in the medium of jazz, the musical performance is not planned in advance. As they play, they don't monitor themselves in terms of a formal theory of performance. As a result, jazz is a natural expression of the mood and feelings of the artists, a moment-by-moment expression of the shelf.

Now, you're in for a treat. I brought some recordings of my favourite jazz artists. We'll spend some time listening to some examples of really good jazz.

15. What is the main purpose of the talk?

16. What does the speaker say is a distinctive characteristic of jazz musicians?

17. What will the class do next?

Good morning, listeners! Welcome once again to have W. C. H.. B. Series "Listen and Learn". With the approach of summer you may have noticed the trees in our area blossoming and their

fruit ripening. But have you ever wondered how fruit ripens, especially after it has fallen from the tree or vine?

The answer is relatively simple. A single chemical called "ethylene"is produced by the fruit itself. And it is this chemical that causes the fruit to ripen. When the fruit produces increased amount of ethylene, the ethylene affects the fruit physiologically. The fruit begins to breathe oxygen, and the oxygen supply in turn raises the internal temperature of the fruit. This increased internal temperature allows the ripening process to begin, with fruits becoming sweeter, less green in color and softer, in short, delicious!

Until our text broadcast. This is Jane Anderson, wishing you a fruitful day.

18. What is the audience listening to ?

19. What is the main topic of the talk?

20. What is the source of ethylene described in the talk?

Dear editor,

With the development of our economy, it's more and more important to have a good command of at least a foreign language. I think it is quite necessary that listening test should be added to the college entrance examination.

As we all know, in the study of English, listening is the most important. Listening, speaking, reading and writing are the four basic parts of learning a foreign language. Without listening, we can't get along well with others. Furthermore, the examination itself wouldn't be complete and perfect if there weren't listening test in it . It also can't reflect the overall ability of the students in learning a foreign language. What's more, in communication with foreigners, if we can't understand what they say, how can we express ourselves freely? So we must take advantage of every chance to practise listening and speaking to develop our English to meet the needs of our society.
