Think of some of your favorite singers. When you listen, they can make you happy or sad, peaceful or angry. They can make you relax or want to get up and dance. Gifted singers have the power to affect us in many ways — emotionally, physically and mentally.

But becoming a great singer isn’t as easy as listening to one. It takes practice, devotion and strong lungs! Just ask the well-known American opera star Carol Vaness.

At the Metropolitan Opera in New York City where she often sings, Carol’s voice must be loud enough to be heard by four thousand people. It must reach every person in the theater, without a microphone, even when she’s singing softly. The reason Carol can project her voice that far is the way she breathes.

―When you breathe, it’s like a swimmer taking a deep breath before going underwater, ‖ Carol explains. ―You have to take a lot of air into your lungs.‖

According to Carol, the main difference between pop singing and opera is ―how you breathe, how much air you take in, and how you control it coming out. Regular singing is more like speaking, and it’s a lot softer. When I sing for children, they’re often surprised by how the vibrations strike their ears —like waves on a beach, ‖ Carol says. ―In opera, the air doesn’t just go out of your mouth — it vibrates in your chest, the way a guitar vibrates when it’s played.‖

Ever since she started piano lessons at the age of ten, Carol has loved music. As she got older, she decided to become a music teacher. When she went to college, she took singing lessons as part of her studies. Her voice teacher discovered that nineteen-year-old Carol had an exceptionally beautiful soprano voice – the highest singing voice for women.

Carol decided to make opera her goal, not only because she loved to sing but also because she loved the drama. Opera is a play in which the characters sing the words instead of speaking them. The stories of opera can be tragic or comical. They can be personal stories about two people falling in love or grand stories about kings and queens who lived long ago. As the characters in an opera sing, the emotions expressed by words and music come to life.

Today, Carol performs throughout the United States and Europe and she has sung for almost twenty years. But she has never forgotten where she started singing in the first palace.

―Put your heart into your singing and enjoy it,‖ says Carol, ―because singing is a great joy.

That’s why I sing. In fact, that’s why everybody sings.‖

The way people hold to the belief that a fun - filled, pain free life equals happiness actually reduces their chances of ever attaining real happiness. If fun and pleasure are equal to happiness then pain must be equal to unhappiness. But in fact, the opposite is true: more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain.

As a result, many people avoid the very attempts that are the source of true happiness. They fear the pain inevitably(不可避免的)brought by such things as marriage, raising children, professional achievement, religious commitment (义务), self - improvement.

Ask a bachelor(单身汉)why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure, excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.

Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a three - day vacation. I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to descri be raising children. But couples who decide not to have children never know the joys of watching a child grow up or of playing with a grandchild.

Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.

64. According to the author, a bachelor resists marriage chiefly because _______ .

A. he is reluctant to take on family responsibilities

B. he believes that life will be more cheerful if he remains single

C. he finds more fun in dating than in marriage

D. he fears it will put an end to all his fun adventure and excitement

65. Raising children, in the author’s opinion is ________ .

A. a moral duty

B. a thankless job

C. a rewarding task

D. a source of inevitable pain

66. From the last paragraph, we learn that envy sometimes stems from ________ .

A. hatred

B. misunderstanding

C. prejudice

D. ignorance

67. To understand what true happiness is one must ________ .

A. have as much fun as possible during one’s lifetime

B. make every effort to liberate oneself from pain

C. put up with pain under all circumstances

D. be able to distinguish happiness from fun

68. What is the author trying to tell us?

A. Happiness often goes hand in hand with pain.

B. One must know how to attain happiness.

C. It is important to make commitments.

D. It is pain that leads to happiness.

D

Russian tradition orders that men should kiss each other three times on the cheeks at official functions. Now, a new ruling in Moscow is calling for politicians in the capital to stick to the old handshake. According to Britain's The Telegraph newspaper, politicians in Moscow have been told to st op kissing each other when they meet because the ―kissing ceremony‖ takes so long.

Leonid Brezhnev, the general secretary of the Communist Party from 1929 to 1932, was famous for treating male colleagues to a full lip-lock. One photograph of him kissing Erich Honecker, the leader of the Democratic Republic of Germany, was used for a protest painting on the Berlin Wall with the caption: "Oh, God, help me survive this deadly love".

Kissing three times on the cheeks at official occasions is a Russian tradition. The practice has been revived among high-ranking officials in the past years. In the distant past, a kiss from the tsar (emperor) was the highest sign of recognition. The Moscow ruling, however, has prompted authorities in other cities to consider banning the practice.

Alexei Kleshko, a parliament member in Siberia, said: ―Single-sex kisses should be avoided, including at official meetings. It's enough to shake hands. Of course, if one is talking about a long friendship or fatherly relations, it might be OK to embrace. But that's the maximum that should be allowed.‖

Another MP Vladimir Gorlov, said he only allowed himself to kiss the hand of a woman at work: "There are informal relations and there are meetings governed by protocol," he said. ―When a man is kissing another man at an official event, I have a negative attitude towards it. There are rules of decency. "

69. Moscow is calling for politicians to stick to handshake because ________.

A. it is popular at home and abroad

B. it is their tradition

C. it saves time

D. Russian women have a strong love of it

70. By mentioning Brezhnev, the author ________.

A. wants to show his respect to Brezhner

B. admires Brezhnev for his skills at kissing

C. just shows the media made fun of pictures of politicians kissing

D. praises Brezhnev’s good relation with Honecker

71. If the tsar kissed a Russian woman, she would feel ________.

A. nervous

B. proud

C. shameful

D. curious

72. We can infer from the last two paragraphs that ________.

A. Kleshko is strongly against any kind of kiss

B. Kleshko is a man out of date

C. Gorlove shares the same view with Kleshko is single-sex kisses

D. Gorlove won’t kiss any man in any form

I was shopping in the supermarket when I heard a young voice boom from across the aisle. ―Mom,come here! There’s this lady here my size!‖

The mother rushed to a boy she called Mickey;then she turned to me to apologize.

I smiled and told her,―It’s okay.‖Then I talked to the boy,―Hi,Mickey,I’m Darry Kramer. How are you?‖

He studied me from head to toe,and asked,―Are you a little mommy?‖

―Yes, I have a son‖I answered.

―Why are you so little?‖he asked.

…It s the way I was born.‖I said.―Some people are little. Some are tall.I’m just not going to grow any bigger.‖After about five more minutes of answering questions,I shook Mickey’s hand, and he returned to his mother.

My life as a little person is filled with stories 1ike that. I enjoy talking to children and explaining why I look different from their parents. It has taken many years to develop my confidence to be able to do that.

It takes only one glance to see my uniqueness.I stand three feet, nine inches tall. I was born an achondroplasia dwarf(侏儒). Despite this,my parents encouraged me to do all the things the kids around me did when I was growing up. When my neighbors got two-wheel bikes,I got a two-wheel bike. When they roller-skated, I roller-skated.

I didn’t realize how short I was until I started school. There,a few kids picked on me,calling me names. Then I knew. After that,I began to hate the first day of school each year. I didn’t know who was new and would stare at me as I struggled to climb the school bus stairs.

As time went on,I just tried to smile and accept the fact that I was going to be noticed my whole life. I was determined to make my uniqueness an advantage rather than a disadvantage.

What I lacked in height,I made up for in personality.

I’m 47 now,an d the stares have not diminished as I’ve grown older. People 1ook in disbelief when they see me get out of my car off the driver’s side.During those times,I try to keep a good attitude. When people are rude,I remind myself,―Look what else I have—a great family. Nice friends.‖

And it’s the children’s questions that make my 1ife special. When I talk with children, they leave content that their questions have been answered. My hope is that in taking time with them,I will encourage them to accept their peers whatever size and shape they come in,and treat them with respect.

Blood Drive at Civic Center

The local university blood center had a blood drive today at the Civic Center auditorium. Almost 300 people showed up, but about 50 were turned away for various medical reasons. Fifty others left because the lines were moving so slowly. The event concluded at 6 pm, three hours after the scheduled close. It was a long day for everyone-administrators, nurses, and donors. But there were plenty of chairs and tables, and many people brought their own books, magazines, or newspapers.

The first thing the donors had to do, of course , was fill out the donor registration and screening form. When they finished filling out the form, they waited until a nurse called them to her desk. The average adult body contains 8 to 12 pints of blood. Donors can give one pint at a time. It takes your body 2 to 4 weeks to replace this amount. Most donors filled up the pint bag within 5 to 10 minutes.

Before leaving, the donors received a sheet of instructions including: Do not lift any heavy objects for 12 hours. Leave your pressure bandage on for 2~3 hours. Do not smoke for at least 30 minutes. Avoid alcohol for the rest of the day. Do not do any laborious activity for 24 hours.

―I wish I could hug and kiss all the volunteers that are here today,‖ said Martha, the blood center donor recruiter. ―Many donors underestimate the importance of what they’re doing. They think it is no big deal, but it is a big deal. Their blood is actually saving lives, helping other people to live, which will lead to a more harmonious society. We cannot thank them enough for that, nor can the recipients.‖

W: How did you feel the first time you talked with a foreigner in English?

M: Nervous. I felt very nervous.

W: Why did you feel nervous?

M: That was many years ago in New York. I was asking a man in the street how to get to the nearest station. I was worried that I might not be able to make myself understood. So I gave every word slowly and clearly.

W: Did he understand you?

M: He nodded and smiled, but did not reply. So I repeated it more slowly.

W: Did he reply this time?

M: Yes, he said as slowly and clearly, ―Sorry, I...no...English.‖

Text 10

Chinese students celebrate their birthdays in different ways, but the most common way is to hold a birthday party, at which friends get together to drink, sing and dance. On his birthday, one usually receives nice gifts and good wishes from his friends and parents. Sometimes, parents will prepare a special dinner or a cake to show their love for their children.

Since a birthday celebration is one of the important activities in one’s life, it can be done in more meaningful ways. For example, we can buy some flowers or cook a delicious meal for our

mothers on that day. In this way, we can express thanks to our parents in return for their love.

18.a birthday party 19.get together; 20.meaningful

21. A midnight午夜前不加冠词;get the best of战胜,击败

22. A a normal response/reaction to sth.

25. D 虚拟条件句中有were/should/had时,可省略if,把were/should/had提前。

26. C take up开始从事;save up储蓄;keep up坚持,继续;draw up起草,制定

27. D used to do sth.过去常做某事;be devoted to doing sth.

28. B on behalf of―代表…‖

If he hadn’t given me…

31. A face vt./ be faced with―面对,面临‖;若选D,则要去掉题干中的with.

33. C be worthy to be done,形容词短语作后置定语,其前省略了that is;而worth的固定结构为be worth doing。

in a row意为连续不断地。

41. D make choices

43. A be diagnosed with...

如:the agent of his own ruin他自我毁灭的根源。

51. D make way(for sb)

54. D be trapped by/in sth.

American opera star.

59. B. 第六段谈到―she decided to become a music teacher…she took singing lessons as part of her studies.‖ 并不意味着―她当上了音乐老师‖。

60. A. 此句话与第二段―But becoming a great singer isn’t as easy as listening to one. It takes practice, devotion and strong lungs!‖相呼应。

根据悉尼的天气预报中―Tomorrow‖信息中的第一句―Showers in the morning with isolated thunderstorms arriving in the afternoon.‖可以判断1月19号下午有雷雨。63.

依据文章第3段第1行―Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he is honest he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment‖(……

66. B提示:依据文章最后一句―And it liberates us from envy:we now understand that all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.‖说明:我们现在的这种理解就可免除嫉妨,那么反过来,嫉妨产生于我们的理解不当,即misunderstanding,故选项B正确。

67. D提示:依据文章第1段第1句―The way people hold to the belief that a fun-filled, pain free life equals happiness actually reduce s their chances of ever attaining real happiness‖(人们坚持充满趣味、毫无痛苦的生活就等于幸福这一信条实际上减少了他们获得真正幸福的可能性)。再依据文章最后一句―…all those who are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all‖(……

68. A提示:作者的意图出现在第1段最后一句:―But in fact, the opposite is true:more often than not things that lead to happiness involve some pain‖(……

69. C 由句子because the ―kissing ceremony‖ takes so long可知。

71. B 由句子In the distant past, a kiss from the tsar (emperor) was the highest sign of recognition.

72. C Kleshko认为―Single-sex kisses sh ould be avoided, including at official meetings. ‖,Gorlov 说―When a man is kissing another man at an official event, I have a negative attitude towards it.

73.By being encouraged to do whatever other kids did.

【解析】由第九段的―Despite this,my parents encouraged me to do all the things the kids around me did when I was growing up.‖可知。

74.Because he wanted them to accept and respect all their peers.

由最后一段的―My hope is that in taking time with them.I will encourage them to accept their peers, whatever size and shape they come in,and treat them with respect.‖可知作者与孩子们交流是希望他们能接受并尊重他们同龄人中的残疾人。

75.Independent ,optimistic,helpful and satisfied /content.

由第十一段的―As time went on,I just tried to smile and accept the fact that I was going to be noticed my whole life…‖可以看出作者的乐观与独立;由十段的I remind myself,―Look what else I have—a great family, nice friends.‖可知作者对现状很满足;作者喜欢与孩子交流,告诉他们要尊重平等对待他们周围的人,可知作者乐于助人。

76.Place/Where 77.200 78.Failing 79.registration 80.Amount

Dear editor,

I’m Li Hua, a reader of your paper.

Your collection of suggestions on how to make the best of stadiums after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is quite important, because good use of them will help bring about social and economic gain. I would like to contribute the following suggestions:

Firstly, the stadiums should be open to the public and the public can exercise in them. Secondly, to make more profits, these stadiums can be rented to companies organizing matches. In addition, they can be used as tourist attrations. As many of them are well designed with strong chinese features, they will surely be attractions for visitors from all over the world.

Your kind consideration of my suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Yours faithfully,

Li Hua

But officials in the Brazilian town of Biritiba Mirim, 70km (45miles) east of Sao Paulo, have gone far beyond that. They plan to prohibit residents from dying early because the local cemetery(墓地) has reached full capacity. There’s no more room to bury the dead, they can’t be cremated(火化) and laws forbid a new cemetery. So the mayor has proposed a strange solution: outlaw death. Mayor Roberto Pereira says the bill is meant as a protest against federal regulations that prohibit new or expanded cemeteries in preservation areas. “They have not taken local demands into consideration”,he claims. A 2019 decree(法令) by Brazil’s National Environment Council forbids burial grounds in protected areas. Mr. Pereira wants to build a new cemetery, but the project has been stopped because 98% of Biritiba Mirim is considered as a preservation area. Biritiba Mirim,a town of 28,000 inhabitants, not only wants to prohibit residents from passing away. The bill also calls on people to take care of their health in order to avoid death. “I haven’t got a job,nor am I healthy. And now th ey say I can’t die. That’s ridiculous,” Amarido do Prado,an unemployed resident said. The city council is expected to vote on the regulation next week. “Of course the bill is laughable, illegal, and will never be approved,” said Gilson Soares de Campos,an assistant of the mayor. “But can you think of a better resolution to persuade the government to change the environmental decree that is prohibiting us from building a new cemetery?” The bill states that “offenders will be held responsible for their acts.” However,it does not say what the punishment will be. 4. What is the bill to be proposed by the officials in Biritiba Mirim? A. Ban on building a new cemetery. B. Ban on parking in certain zones. C. Forbidding buried grounds in preservation. D. Prohibiting residents from dying early. 5. What can we infer from the phrase “have gone far beyond that” in the first paragraph? A. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have made these regulations. B. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have been to many places around the world. C. The bill to be proposed by officials in Biritiba Mirim is much too unexpected. D. The officials in Biritiba Mirim have built too many cemeteries in their town. 6. What’s the attitude of the mayor of Biritiba Mirim towards the federal regulations? A. He gives strong backing to them. B. He objects to them. C. He remains silent about them. D. He asks the residents for advice on them. 7. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
