Teenagers like watching TV, but their weight problem is becoming more and more serious. Sports shoes that work out whether their owner has done enough exercise to assure time in front of the television have been designed in

the UK.

The shoes named Square Eves contain an electronic pressure sensor and a tiny computer chip to record how many steps the weather has taken in a day. A wireless transmitter (发射器) passes the information to a receiver connected to a television, and this decides how much evening viewing time th e wearer deserves, based on the day’s efforts.

The design was inspired by a desire to fight against the rapidly ballooning waistlines among British teenagers, says Gillian Swan, who developed Square Eyes as a final year design project at Brunel University in London, UK. We looked at current issues and childhood overweight really stood out,” she says. "And I wanted to deal with that with my design.”

Once a child has used up their daily allowance gained through exercise, the television automatically switches off. And further time in front of the TV can only be earned through more steps.

Swan calculated how exercise should translate to television time using the recommended daily amounts of both. Health experts suggest that a child take 12,000 steps each day and watch no more than two hours of television. So, every 100 steps recorded by the Square Eyes shoes equals precisely one minute of TV time.

Existing pedometer (计步器) normally clip onto a belt or slip into a pocket and keep count of steps by measuring sudden movement. Swan says these can be easily tricked into recording steps through shaking. But her shoe has been built to be harder for lazy teenagers to cheat. “It is possible, but it would be a lot of effort,” she says. “That was one of my main design conside rations.”

1. According to Swan, the purpose of her design project is to ________.

A. keep a record of the steps of the wear6r

B. enable children to resist the temptation of TV

C. prevent children from being tricked by TV programs

D. deal with overweight among teenagers

2. Which of the following is true of Square Eyes shoes?

A. They determine a child’s daily pocket money.

B. They regulate a child5s evening TV viewing time.

C. They have raised the hot issue of overweight.

D. They contain information of the receiver.

3. What is stressed by health experts in their suggestion?

A. The exact number of steps to be taken.

B. The proper amount of daily exercise and TV time.

C. The precise number of hours spent on TV.

D. The way of changing steps into TV watching time.

4. Compared with other similar products, the new design ________.

A. records the sudden movement of the wearer

B. counts the wearer’s steps through shaking

C. makes it difficult for lazy teenagers to cheat

D. sends teenagers’ health data to the receiver

B.

Winters are long and unforgiving in North Dakota. The winter of 1996 was especially brutal. It was a hard time in my own life too, A neck injury had kept me flat in bed for nearly a year. “Just in time for Easter,” my husband, Dick, said. But how could I feel the joy when the snow was four feet deep and I had months of painful physical treatment ahead?

I was doing the dishes one day, feeling hopeless when there was a tap against the glass. It was a branch of the troublesome cottonwood (棉白杨).Back in the fall of 1979, it was a new subdivision (分支) then, an eight-foot stick. The people who’d briefly occupied the house before us had placed the pipe from the pump next to it. The earth was so wet that the poor thing had fallen down, most of its bare root system pointing skyward, and blowing hopelessly back and forth in the cold wind. Dick decided to pull it out one day, but I disapproved of it.

“Look at how hard it’s trying!” I said, pointing to the way it strongly kept hold of the earth. “It deserves a chance.”

Dick borrowed some tools. We packed dry soil around the tree and put up some stakes (桩) into the ground, making it stand upright. That winter was still terrible. Surprisingly, in the spring my “rescue stick” put forth a few leaves, then with lots of branches. The year after that, we were able to remove the stakes. By the 1990s that little stick was a giant, towering over the house.

Now the tapping at the window continued, louder as the wind picked up, almost as though to tell me to look up. At last, I did. I caught ray breath. In the window against the icy blue sky, thousands and thousands of fresh red buds were waving in the wind.

The tree was bursting with life and I had a wonderful Easter.

5. What is the meaning of the underlined word “brutal” in Paragra ph 1 probably mean?

A. busy.

B. hard.

C. long.

D. warm.

6. How did Dick rescue the new subdivision?

A. By supporting the stick firmly.

B. By watering the stick regularly.

C. By distributing chemical fertilizer.

D. By gathering sticks day and night.

7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?

A. To inform us of the current condition of her cottonwood.

B. To imply that she’d spent the hardest time and felt hopeful.

C. To tell us that the tree had survived from the awful winter

D. To suggest what she was going to do for the coming festival.

8. Which of the following can serve as the main idea of the passage?

A. A friend in need is a friend indeed,

B. There is no garden without its weeds.

C. Success is the accumulation of sweat,

D. Where there is life, there is hope.

C.

The Indian government may use 3D paintings as virtual (虚拟的) speed-breakers on major highways and roads, in an attempt to check speeding and careless driving, and eventually make its deadly roads a little safer. “We are trying out 3D paintings used as virtual speed breakers to avoid unnecessary requirements of speed breakers (减速带),” India’s transport minister Nitin Gadkari tweeted.

The visual illusions (幻象) are supposed to encourage drivers to slow down automatically. Earlier this month, India bad ordered the removal of all speed breakers from highways, which are considered to be a danger to safety for high-speed vehicles.

India has the highest number of road accident deaths in the world According to the World Health Organization, over 200,00 people are killed by road accidents due to poor application of road safety laws. This is considerably higher than its official figures of 141,526 for 2014.

The use of visual illusions as speed breakers was first pioneered in the American city of Philadelphia in 2008, as part of a campaign against speeding motorist. The technique has also been tried out in China to create floating 3D crossings.

India, cities such as Ahmadabad and Chennai have already experimented with 3D zebra crossings in the last one year. In Ahmadabad for instance, two artists, mother and daughter have painted 3D crosswalks in the first few months of this year. The artists say their motto is “to increase the attention of drivers”, and that the concept has been successfully tested in zones where accidents easily occur on a highway.

However, critics argue that once divers know that these speed briers are visual illusions, they may ignore them. Others also point out that India’s decision does not consider the safety of a l arge walkers. In the end, the new policy may be just one step towards improving road safety.

9. According to the passage, 3D paintings as virtual speed breakers in India aims to ________.

A. replace all speed breakers from highways

B. encourage essential requirements of speed breakers

C. check speeding and careless driving on all highways

D. remind divers to speed down voluntarily for road safety

10. What caused the high number of road accident deaths in India?

A. Speeding motorists.

B. Floating 3D crossings.

C. Free use of visual illusions.

D. Bad application of traffic laws.

11. The author explains the experiment of 3D zebra crossings in India by ________.

A. giving examples

B. analyzing causes

C. providing figures

D. making comparisons

12. Wha t’s the author’s attitude towards 3D zebra crossings?

A. Subjective.

B. Objective.

C. Supportive.

D. Critical.
