Two-year-old Harley was asleep with her younger sister in their home in Eden, North Carolina. While their parents were outside welcoming their older sister home from school, the wires in the family’s laundry

room caught fire and before anyone knew what was happening, the bedroom next door was consumed in flames.

Harley’s father was able to rescue his two youngest daughters and save their lives, but Harley was severely burned on 80 percent of her body and her parents were told that she was likely to pass away. Over the next several months, Harley would put up with surgery after surgery and remain hooked up to a ventilator(呼吸机)at the hospital. When she was finally released to go home, Harley had no idea that the toughest battle had not even begun yet.

When Harley started school just a few years later, she realized for the first time how cruel her peers could be. Bullied for her appearance and called hateful names, she began to consider ending her life while only in Grade 8. When her friends were getting their first boyfriends and going on their first dates, she was sitting at home wondering if she should end her life.

But in 2013, something changed. It was not something on the outside but something inside Harley. She made the conscious decision to become more like the carefree, laughing, joyous little girl that she had not seen since that night in 1997. “Shake a leg” and “show a leg” are usually discussed together, but it isn’t at all clear how they are connected. Both phrases have more than one meaning.

“Shake a leg” means “hurry up” according to the definition in the New York Magazine in 1904. Before that, “shake a leg” had another meaning, which was “to dance”. There are several quotations from all kinds of American and Britain sources from the mid-19th century that are related to dancing; for example, the Dubuque Democratic Herald, October 1863, in an advertisement for a local ball: “Nearly every man in town able to shake a leg has purchased a ticket.”

“Show a leg” means either “make an appearance”, or it means “hurry up”. The second meaning isn’t commonly used, nor is it old. Whatever the source, it isn’t the original meaning of “show a leg”. Most commentators report that the phrase derives from the Royal Navy and that this was the order given to sailors to put a foot from their hammocks(吊床)and get up.

The use of “show a leg” as a wake-up call is well documented. John Masefield (Poet Laureate from 1930 to 1967) was a trainee mariner on HMS Conway until 1891. He reported the full version of the

morning ca ll as: “Heave out, heave out, heave out, heave out! Away! Come all you sleepers, Hey! Show a

leg.”That’s the earliest quotation of the naval call I can find, although it may have been used well before

1891.

An alternative version comes from the fact that women were allowed on board Royal Navy ships in the

19th century and that they were allowed to stay asleep after the sailors had been woken. In the morning the

bosun’s mates(水手长助手)had to check whoever was still asleep and did so by requiring them to show a

leg over the side of the hammock. If a leg was hairy, it was probably male and its owner was ordered to get

up and begin work. Believe that if you will; personally, I don’t.

All in all, although both of the two English slangs are sometimes used to mean “hurry up”, they are two independent phrases that were coined with different meanings.

28. How many ways does the slang “show a leg” come from?

A. 1.

B. 2.

C. 3.

D. 4.

29. In which sentence does “shake a leg” have a different mean ing?

A. I will shake a leg with him at the next ball with great pleasure.

B. Nearly every man in town able to shake a leg has purchased a ticket.

C. They wanted to shake a leg on a TV show.

D. You must shake a leg to catch the last bus.

30. What is the author’s attitude to the version mentioned in Paragraph 5?

A. Doubtful.

B. Supportive.

C. Indifferent.

D. Neutral.

31. The author’s purpose of writing the text is most likely to __________.

A. to persuade readers to learn slangs seriously

B. to describe “s hake a leg” and “show a leg”

C. to distinguish “s hake a leg” and “show a leg”

D. to remark on “s hake a leg” and “show a leg”

Chinese authorities will launch a campaign to regulate Internet finance, which is growing rapidly but

threatens social stability due to illegal activities. Departments of political and legal work at all levels will

work with banking regulatory authorities to establish a monitoring and warning system against financial risks and enhance information sharing among different regions and departments, according to a statement released at the central conference on political and legal work held in Beijing in January 2016.

Internet finance refers to loans, investments and other financial services through online channels rather than banks and other traditional financial institutions. Growing Internet finance industry has helped reduce trade costs and made investments easier. But Internet finance has also brought about danger, and risks have surged as more people have been discovered to be raising funds illegally. These crimes, involving many people and a large amount in assets, may cause social risks.

Authorities will crack down on (put down) illegal activities while protecting the legitimate (legal) rights of citizens and enterprises and lessening investors’ losses. They will also educate the public on risks, according to the statement. Police are investigating the Beijing-based E-Zubao, a large online financial platform, and associated companies for suspected illegal activities.

China has seen rising online cheating, particularly in peer-to-peer lending, in the past year, according to a report published by online security company Liewang, whose name is translated into WEB HUNT.

The company handled 24,886 reports of online cheating in 2015, up 7.96 percent from last year. The claims were worth a total of 127 million yuan (19 million U.S. dollars). Each claim was 5,106 yuan, about 1.5 times the number in 2014.

32. From the passage we know that__________.

A. Regulations in Internet finance will be made in China.

B. It is impossible to avoid Internet financial risks.

C. Chinese authorities will ban Internet finance.

D. Traditional financial institutions are safer.

33. What does the underlined word “surged” in the second paragraph mean?

A. poured.

B. appeared.

C. increased.

D. faded.

34. Why authorities will crack down on illegal activities in Internet finance?

A. Because Internet finance develops too quickly.

B. Because Internet finance reduces trade costs.

C. Because Internet finance makes investments easier.

D. Because there are many crimes in Internet finance.

35. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. There are many cheating phenomena in Internet finance in China.

B. Police are investigating E-Zubao, a large online financial platform in China.

C. Authorities will take action to stop illegal online financial activities in China.

D. Illegal activities in Internet finance have to be banned in China.

Successful female singers tend to have slim figures and pretty faces. But even if British singer Adele Adkins, 27, doesn’t quite fit into this image, it hasn’t stopped her from a smashing success. Adele’s album 25 sold 3.48 million copies in the first week of its release, making it the biggest-selling album of 2015.

36

First and foremost, Adele’s voice plays the most important part in making her popular. 37 As the Chicago Tribune commented, she sings about her personal struggles sincerely with emotional words that invite everyone into her world. The pain and longing in her songs satisfy a universal need for love. It is this sense of ‘we’ve been here before’ that makes Adele.

But music is not all that matters. 38 In a comedy show, Adele was shown to be the one who could make quarrelling relatives at the Thanksgiving dinner table put their differences aside. She collected many life-long fans with her girl-next-door charm.

39 Jillian Mapes wrote about this on the New York magazine site Vulture: “Adele is among the first plus-size female cultural idols(偶像)to reach the highest level of success without having to make herself the butt(笑柄)of fat jokes…She’s shaped like me and like two-thirds of American women.”

40

A. In other words, Adele sends a feminist (女权) message by being who she is.

B. Adele is not just a woman but an everywoman.

C. What is behind the soaring popularity?

D. Adele’s hard work also matters.

E. Do you want to know more about the life of Adele?

F. Adele’s easy-going personality is also a plus.

G. She has an awe-inspiring voice that shows her genuine talent.

A(人物故事类)

根据第二段“Harley had no idea the toughest battle had not even begun yet”和第三段第一行“she realized for the first time how cruel her peers could be”可知哈利最大的挑战是同伴们的歧视。故选B。

B(广告信息类)

根据第三部电影简介中“In the summer of 1980, Jake, a freshman(大一新生), moved into an old college house”可知EVERYONE W ANTS SOME讲述美国80年代大学生活。

B 项EVERYONE W ANTS SOME讲述开学前的最后一个周末的生活(all in the last weekend before school began)。

C(人文语言类)

【语篇导读】文章就“s hake a leg”和“show a leg”这两个俚语进行对比讲解,尤其对“show a leg”的两大历史由来进行阐述。

根据第三段“the phrase derives from the Royal Navy”和第五段“An alternative version comes from the fact that…”

根据第五段最后一句话“Believe that if you will; personally, I don’t.”可知。

从首尾两段可知作者写此文章的目的在于区别“s hake a leg” 和“show a leg”这两个俚语。

根据文中第一段中的第一句话“Chinese authorities will launch a campaign to reg ulate Internet finance” 可知。

根据其前“But Internet finance has also brought about danger”和其后“as more people have been discovered to be raising funds illegally”可知。

根据本文的主旨句“Chinese authorities will launch a campaign to regulate Internet finance, which is growing rapidly but threatens social stability due to illegal activities.”

41.D 根据后面“protect me from the snowy weather” 可知是冬天。

标题和第一段“promised that I would not lose the hat”都有提示.

44.C 根据第二段“Upstairs I rushed two steps at a time, 45 to put on a fashion show . I threw the coat …”

45.D根据45空前“I rushed two steps at a time” 一步两阶飞奔上楼可知作者很兴奋要展示新衣服并且不知道帽子已经掉了。

46.C 根据46空前“I couldn’t find the hat” 可知作者穿好衣服却找不到帽子时很紧张。

I wasn’t wearing it不搭配。remember(recall to one’s memory)强调之前有印象后再次记起。

49.D 第二段“Upstairs I rushed two steps at a time” 可知上楼穿衣服,穿好下楼展示。

51.C 此题前“trying to avoid the subject of the hat” 可知作者已经知道她弄丢了帽子。

52.A 从“my father seemed to have forgotten it, laughing and playing with me”可知父亲忘记帽子这回事。

53.B “h e slapped me hard on the face”和“laughing and playing with me”形成转折(however).

Maybe now you’ll learn not to be careless可知父亲行为的目的。

从“Fortunately, my father seemed to have forgotten it, laughing and playing with me”可知作者一开始相信父亲流露的情感是真实的。

(Text 1)

M: I’m glad we came here. The food here was really delicious.

W: I was worried you would think it was too far to drive.

(Text 2)

W: Darling, I got some pizzas, potato chips, hot dogs and lots of cheese!

M: Oh, Mary. I thought we said we would start eating healthy food and getting regular exercise.

(Text 3)

M: I can’t quit smoking. I’ve tried so many times but nothing seems to work.

W: Of course, you can. You have to believe in yourself.

M: I don’t think I have enough confidence.

(Text 4)

W: What did the doctor say?

M: He thinks I’ve got too much stress.

W: So what did he tell you to do? Did he give you any medicine?

M: No, he said I needed to think positive.

(Text 5)

M: Why are you looking so worried these days?

W: I’m worried about Jack and Lucy. After all, this is the first time they have been out without us.

M: As parents, we have to realize that they have grown up already.

W: I know, but I just can’t help worrying.

(Text 6)

M: I’m forming a band.

W: Do you know how to play an instrument?

M: Uh…Yeah! I’ve told you many times that I’ve been learning how to play the violin. Now that I know how to play well, I would like to form a band.

W: Except for you, who are the other members of the band?

M: We have a guy who plays the guitar, and another who plays the piano. But we still haven’t found anyone

to be our singer. I remember you told me that you have some musical talent, right?

W: Yes. I really like singing and I think my singing’s not bad.

M: Perfect. Would you like to join us?

W: Yes, I would, but I think I should have a talk with my parents first.

M: OK, I’ll wait to hear from you.

(Text 7)

M: Hi, Rose. That’s really a lovely painting.

W: Thanks, Ted. But it’s not that perfect. You know I’m learning.

M: Let me see. I think it might be the color of the mountain.

W: Why? The mountain is yellow, isn’t it? After all, it’s autumn.

M: I mean the autumn can be full of other colors, such as reds and greens.

W: Oh, yeah. That’s the point.

M: By adding some other colors to the mountain, you’ll get a more natural picture.

W: I’ll try that. How do you know this? Have you taken some art courses?

M: No, actually, my aunt is an artist. She’s told me a lot about painting, and has taken me along with her to different exhibitions.

W: I see. I hope I can meet her some day.

(Text 8)

W: Has anyone told you about Jessica’s party?

M: Yeah. I’m just waiting for my invitation.

W: Is that right? I have already got mine.

M: I’m sure she will give me the invitation today.

W: Shall I tell her when I pass her home in case that she forgets? You still remember she forgot to invite Mary last year.

M: Yes, but I think it’s unnecessary to tell her. After all, we have been close friends for ten years. I don’t think she can. By the way, when exactly does the party start?

W: The invitation says it starts at 8:00 pm, half an hour earlier than her last birthday party.

M: Has she given out a lot of invitations yet?
