When Jake Olson isn’t playing football or golf for his high school, he’s often offering inspiration through his new book about his own life.
These activities might be too much for the average 16-year-old to deal with, but Jake is blind. When people ask him how he can possibly play golf without being able to see the ball, he says he is thankful for his father’s guidance.
It seems apparent that his early experience playing sports as a person with sight and muscle memory— repeating behaviors over and over until they become second nature — have also enabled Jake to hit the ball quite well.
Jake was born with a rare kind of eye cancer that took away the vision from his left eye when he was a very young child and eventually his right eye, in 2009, when he was 12 years old. Rather than letting the disease hold him back, Jake used his loss of sight and his faith as sources of motivation.
“If I was going to sit on the couch all day feeling sorry for myself, I wasn’t going to do anything. I decided r ight then and there that I wasn’t going to let it stop me and that I was going to go out and persevere (坚持不懈),”he said.
It was with that mind-set that the student from Orange Lutheran High School in California was able to write his first book, Open Your Eyes: 10 Uncommon Lessons to Discover a Happier Life. “It’s about opening the readers’eyes to their true potential in life and making sure that they use all the abilities that they have,” Jake said.

Years ago a John Hopkins professor gave a group of graduate students this task: Go to the slums(贫民窟), Take 200 boys, between the ages of 12 and 16, and investigate their background and environment, then predict their chances for the future.
The students, after consulting social statistics, talking to the boys, and collecting much data,concluded that 90 percent of the boys would spend some time in prison.
Twenty-five years later another group of graduate students was given the job of testing the prediction.
They went back to the same area. Some of the boys -- by then men -- were still there, a few had died, some had moved away, but they came into contact with 180 of the original 200. They found that only four of the group had ever been sent to prison.
Why was it that these men, who had lived in a breeding place of crime, had such a surprisingly good record? The researchers were continually told, “Well, there was a teacher…”
They pressed(追问)further, and found that in 75 percent of the cases it was the same woman. The researchers went to this teacher, now living in a home for retired teachers. How had she had this remarkable influence on that group of children? Could she give them any reason why these boys should have remembered her?

Don’t you just love ice skating every winter? Don’t you want to impress your friends with your new trick on how to ice skate backwards with the help of these tips. Follow the steps given below and you will be able to skate backwards in no time.
Stand straight
The first thing that you need to do is stand straight. If you feel that you are falling backwards, then just put your chin up and slightly bend your knees. Don’t worry; this happens to all.
Maintain speed
Now the next step is to maintain your speed. While rolling in a straight line with one skate, with the other try sculling(滑浆), that is, keep pushing yourself backwards with an outwards stroke(滑动). Now bring the skate which you were using to scull, and repeat the same process. Make sure that you put most of your weight on the skate which is moving straight and not the one with which you are sculling. Now, try the same thing using the other foot. Again keep doing this till you are confident enough.
Increase your speed now
Once you are confident that you can scull with either foot, the next thing that you have to do is increasing your speed. Try some of your own tricks now. Scull with either foot or with both at the same time.
Scull and be aware
While you keep one foot straight, keep sculling with the other. You can do that simultaneously with both feet. Concentrate on what you are doing but don’t see where you are doing. If you are not watching your back, you might just bang against something or someone.

According to the recent survey, one in every five fish sold was caught illegally. It threatens(威胁) food security and hurts the environment. Officials are using new observational technology to fight illegal fishing.
“Thank you for taking the time to join us here in Harwell (UK) in the Operations Center to what we call ‘Proje ct Eyes on the Seas.’” says Tony Long, who leads the Ending Illegal Fishing program for Pew Charitable Trusts. The group created Project Eyes on the Seas. Large three-dimensional images of a globe can be seen on a video.
“It looks different from what you m ight expect because this globe only shows you the boats that are coming into this system from a live automated information system or AIS.”
The screen shows 120,000 fishing boats have AIS. They are required to have the technology. But those who are fishing illegally often turn it off. The technology does not tell observers when that happens.
Mr. Long says that permits researchers to understand exactly where the fishing boats are operating. The Pew team gives the information it gathers to port officials to help them decide if they should take action against a ship. Tony Long says he would like to be able to provide port officials all over the world with clear lists. They would inform the officials about ships to inspect, ships to bar from entrance, and ships to permit entrance for trade activities.
The Pacific island nation of Palau was an early user of the technology. Palau has one of the richest fishing areas in the world. Last year, it announced a plan to ban commercial fishing in a 630,000 square kilometer area. K.B. Sakuma is a special adviser to the president of Palau. He says Palau is trying to deal with a recent increase in illegal, unsupervised(无人监管的)and unreported fishing.
Mr. Sakuma hopes the information from the project will help Palau fight fishing piracy.
