Preface to the third edition The …Safety Rules and Regulations for Plant Maintenance Work“ have
become one of the most important reference works at BASF in the area of occupational health and safety. The second edition alone, which was
published in 1995, had a print run of around 25,000 copies. For this edition, the book's earlier title …Safety Rules and Regulations for Plant Maintenance Workers“ has been revised to take account of the fact that, in accordance with section 19i of the Water Resources Act, many of the activities described in the book may now be carried out by production personnel. The numerous external requests for copies are proof that the book enjoys great popularity outside BASF. In order to meet external demand in the future, we have
decided that the safety rules and regulations will be available from
bookstores.
Non-BASF users of the …Safety Rules and Regulations for Plant Maintenance Workers“ should be aware that the book is based on the relevant
occupational health and safety regulations and is illustrated using practical real-life examples. The book is designed to cover BASF's own internal
requirements so that individual regulations may deviate from or extend
existing statutory provisions. Such modifications have only been made
following consultation with the relevant authorities and the German
Employers' Liability Insurance Association. We have taken great care to avoid errors and omissions. However, BASF assumes no liability in this
regard, nor for accidents, loss or damage of any kind which might be
associated with the use of this work.
Five years have elapsed since the last edition of this book. In that time,
numerous national and BASF-internal rules and regulations have changed. As a result a number of procedures and a great number of the photographs and illustrations in the book were no longer up-to-date. Reason enough we feel to issue a new revised edition.

The latest edition appears at a time when BASF has set itself the goal of
reducing the worktime lost due to accidents at our Ludwigshafen site by
twenty per cent a year. We hope that this new edition of the …Safety Rules
and Regulations for Plant Maintenance Workers“ will actively contribute to
achieving this goal and to improving safety standards.
