When my father was dying, I traveled a thousand miles from home to be with him in his last days. It was far more heartbreaking than I'd expected, one of the most difficult and painful times in my life. After he passed away I stayed alone in his apartment. There were so many things to deal with. It all seemed endless. I was lonely. I hated the silence of the apartment.

But one evening the silence was broken: I heard crying outside. I opened the door to find a little cat on the steps. He was thin and poor. He looked the way I felt. I brought him inside and gave him a can of fish. He ate it and then almost immediately fell sound asleep.

The next morning I checked with neighbors and learned that the cat had been abandoned by his owner who'd moved out. So the little cat was there all alone, just like I was. As I walked back to the apartment, I tried to figure out what to do with him. Having something else to take care of seemed like the very last thing I needed. But as soon as I opened the apartment door he came running and jumped into my arms. It was clear from that moment that he had no intention of going anywhere. I started c alling him Willis, in honor of my father’s best father.

From then on, things grew easier. With Willis in my lap time seemed to pass much more quickly. When the time finally came for me to return home, I had to decide what to do about Willis. There was absolutely no way I would leave without him.

It's now been five years since my father died. Over the years, several people have commented on how nice it was of me to rescue the cat. But I know that we rescued each other. I may have given him a home but he gave me something greater.

Children are missing an important part of their education because parents cannot afford their after-school activities. Half of parents in Wales are saying “no” to after-school activities because they cannot afford them according to a poll for Save the Children.

The government said providing free or subsidized(补助的)leisure activities for children from poorer background is essential to reducing child poverty in the UK. Of those who pay for activities, Save the Children said almost half of parents had to pay more than£10 per child per week. Many parents were paying more than $20 per week, the survey found.

“What happens after the school gates close at 3:30 pm is just as momentous as what goes on in the school day,” said Sally Copley at Save the Children. “Children who do after-school activities have more confidence, see the world in different ways and have a stronger sense of identity. All this finally translates into doing better in exams and getting a better career.”

Half of parents in Wales of 4-to-18-year-olds said their child did some form of sporting activity, the most popular after-school activity. Other popular choices included drama/dance (26%), Brownies/Scouts(童子军)(18%) and music lessons(13%). Almost a third of parents said activities they would like their child to take part in were located more than six miles from where they lived.

Save the Children said its research highlighted that children from poorer backgrounds did not have the same chances as their better-off friends. Many local governments have offered a wide range of after-school activities which are affordable and appropriate for children and young people in their area. The Welsh Assembly Government’s community-focused schools programme supports local education authorities to develop a range of out-of-school-hours learning opportunities and childcare for children and young people.

B. make children lack confidence and a sense of identity.

C. get children adapt to the society and start their own business.

D. can help children learn better and find better jobs.

58. What would children best like to choose as their after-school activity according to Para.4?

It was evening rush hour on Pacific Coast Highway in Redondo Beach, CA. Drivers lined up from traffic signal to traffic signal and were anxious to get home. On a side street merging (并入) into this highway was a timid driver who was afraid to edge in and no one let her in. Some of the drivers backed up behind her and loudly blasted their horns. This made her more upset and nervous.

On the right of this side street, the signal on Pacific Coast Highway turned red and traffic stopped. A driver who saw what was happening to this woman stopped a few car lengths behind her car and motioned to her to pull in front of his car. She quickly did and as he waited, two more cars dashed in behind her car.

While the woman he’d helped waited for the signal to turn green, she sank into her driver’s seat and was deeply relieved. Although this thoughtful man couldn’t see it, her body langu age expressed her gratitude.

If you’ve been in a traffic situation like the one she was in, you know how upsetting it can be. But this little act of kindness allowed her to safely reach her home. She told others about this, which encouraged them to do something nice for someone else.

This kindness spreads. Someone does something nice for you and in turn you’re likely to do something nice for that person or for someone else.

A simple act of kindness could have a widespread effect. It’s like a stone that dr ops in a pond and causes ripples in each direction. No one knows how far those ripples will travel but they will affect everything they touch along the way.

59. How did the thoughtful man help the lady driver to edge in the traffic flow?

A. He drove in front of her car and asked her to follow his car.

B. He signaled to her to drive in when the traffic signal turned green.

C. He stopped his car some distance back to give her enough space to move in.

D. He stopped a few cars from dashing in behind her car.

60. What can we know about most of the drivers on Pacific Coast Highway from the story?

A. They were not friendly or thoughtful.

B. They are thankful to the driver who helped the lady.

C. They blasted their horns to encourage the lady driver.

D. They were not anxious to get home.

61. How does the writer feel about the behavior of the man who helped the lady?

A. Worried.

B. proud

C. Upset.

D. Moved.

62. What would be the best title for the passage?

A. A Thoughtful Man Driver Who Helped a Lady Driver

B. A Tiny Act of Kindness Makes the World Nicer

C. A Lady Driver in an upsetting Traffic Situation

D. The Rush Hour on Pacific Coast Highway

HANGZHOU, April 4 (Xinhua) —Another H7N9 bird flu case has been confirmed in east China's Zhejiang Province, the provincial health department said Thursday, bringing the country's total number of cases to 10.

The patient is a 64-year-old man from Huzhou City. He became ill on March 29 and was admitted to a hospital in Huzhou on March 31.

On Thursday, medical experts confirmed that he was infected with the H7N9 bird flu strain after the provincial center for disease control and prevention said late Wednesday that he tested positive for the virus.

An investigation has found that all 55 people who had close contact with the man have not showed any abnormal clinical symptoms, the department said.

So far, China has confirmed 10 H7N9 cases —four in Jiangsu Province, two in Shanghai Municipality, one in Anhui Province and three in Zhejiang. The two patients in Shanghai and one in Zhejiang have died.

Health authorities and hospitals in many Chinese provinces have been on high alert for H7N9 cases.

In Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi Province, which neighbors Zhejiang, five hospitals have been selected and ordered to be ready to treat H7N9 patients, though no cases have been reported there.

China's health authorities have promised transparency(透明) and cooperation to the World Health Organization (WHO) in regards to human infections of the new strain of bird flu.

On Wednesday afternoon, the National Health and Family Planning Commission distributed prevention and control plans and technique directives(指示)to health institutions nationwide. "So far, the sources of infection have not been clear, but based on past experiences and recent epidemiological (病理学的) studies, the sources could be poultry or the secretion and excrement from poultry," according to the plan.

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday that no human-to-human transmission of H7N9 has been discovered and no epidemiological connection between these cases has been found.

63. What’s the main idea of the passage?

There are many differing thoughts on the effectiveness of hypnosis (催眠) as a kind of treatment. However, scientific studies seem to have concluded that hypnosis is not only a true kind of treatment but also highly effective. There have been a number of controlled studies in recent decades and they all seem to agree hypnosis most definitely does work. Within this essay I will discuss just two of many studies about hypnosis and how they show that hypnosis works.

In a study released in the Journal of Clinical Psychology to test the helpfulness of hypnosis in losing weight, 109 volunteers (ranging from the age of 17 to 67) completed a behavioral treatment either with or without the addition of hypnosis. The treatment took nine weeks and during return check-ups both eight months and two years after the treatment the people who used hypnosis showed a continued weight loss rate much higher tha n the people who didn’t. Those who used hypnosis were much better at achieving their ideal weight goals.

In 2009, researchers at Hull University found that hypnosis had an influence on brain scans. This shows that hypnosis had an influence on brain activity that can be picked up on brain scans. This shows that hypnosis is not just a placebo treatment (安慰疗法) as some doubters claim it is. “Our study shows hypnosis is real,” said British psychologist Dr. Michael Heap who was involved in the study. This piece of research shows that hypnosis works and also exactly how it works.

There are also studies proving that hypnosis works for pain relief, improving skin quality, improving confidence as well as helping with many other problems. If you’ve ever thought about using hypnosis but were not sure whether it would work for you, you should now have all the proof you need to use hypnosis with confidence.

67. The study mentioned in Para.2 shows that ______.

A. hypnosis works immediately after being used

B. hypnosis is effective in helping people lose weight

C. people will gain weight if stopping using hypnosis

D. old people have difficulty in achieving ideal weight goals

68. We learn from the 2009 study that hypnosis ______.

A. does not really work

B. is just a kind of comfort

C. can help improve confidence

D. has visible function on the brain

69. The passage mentions the following possible effects of hypnosis except _______.

A. easing pain

B. improving skin quality

C. shaping character

D. helping losing weight

70. What is the author’s attitude towards using hypnosis?

A. Negative.

B. Approving.

C. Cautious.

D. Skeptical.

One possible version:

Pets are often a much-loved part of may families. However, some owners allow their pets to run out of control, which can cause problems for others. Besides, animals’ wastes are a serious problem because they spread disease. Even worse, some dogs become aggressive and bite people, sometimes causing serious injury.

To keep us safe and healthy, we should change the uncivilized way that some people keep pets. In my opinion, the government should take measures to bring it under control. Also, remember that if you are unfortunate enough to be bitten by a dog, you should deal with it in the proper way and go to see a doctor.

期中英语考试卷及答案

英语期中考试试卷 Part I Reading Comprehension (10×4 = 40) Passage One Television has opened windows in everybody's life. Young men will never again go to war as they did in 1914. Millions of people now have seen the effects of a battle. And the result has been a general dislike of war, and perhaps more interest in helping those who suffer from all the terrible things that have been shown on the screen. Television has also changed politics. The most distant areas can now follow state affairs, see and her the politicians before tan election. Better informed, people are more likely to vote, and so to make their opinion count. Unfortunately, television's influence has been extremely harmful to the young. Children do not have enough experience to realize that TV shows present an unreal world; that TV advertisements lie to sell products that are sometimes bad or useless. They believe that the violence they see is normal and acceptable. All educators agree that the "television generations" are more violent than their parents and grandparents. Also, the young are less patient. Used to TV shows, where everything is quick and interesting, they do not have the patience to read an article without pictures; to read a book that requires thinking; to listen to a teacher who doesn't do funny things like the people on children's programs. And they expect all problems to be solved happily in ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes. That's the time it takes on the screen. 1. In the past, many young people ______. A) knew the effects of war B) went in for politics C) liked to save the wounded in wars D) were willing to be soldiers 2. Now with TV people can ________. A) discuss politics at an information center B) show more interest in politics C) make their own decisions on political affairs D) express their opinions freely 3. The author thinks that TV advertisements ______. A) are not reliable on the whole B) are useless to people C) are a good guide to adults D) are very harmful to the young 4. Which is NOT true according to the passage? A) People have become used to crimes now. B) With a TV set some problems can be solved quickly. C) People now like to read books with pictures. D) The adults are less violent than the young. 5. From the passage, we can conclude that _______. A) children should keep away from TV B) TV programs should be improved C) children's books should have pictures D) TV has a deep influence on the young Passage Two Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people but I also explain that there's a big difference between "being a writer" and " writing". In most cases these individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hour alone at a typewriter. "You've got to want to write," I say to them, "not want to be a writer". The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer killed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in
