Brazil has become one of the most successful developing countries in reducing population growth, but more by accident than by design. While countries such as India have made great efforts to reduce birth rates, Brazil has had better results without really trying, saying George Martine at Harvard.

Brazil’s population growth rate has dropped from 2.99% a year between 1951 and 1960 to 1.93% a year between 1981 and 1990, and Brazilian women now have only 2.7 children on average. Martine says this figure may have fallen still further since 1990, an achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World countries.

Martine puts it down to, among other things, soap operas and family plans introduced in the 1970s. Both played an important, although indirect, role in lowering the birth rate. Brazil is one of the world’s biggest producers of soap operas. Globo, Brazil’s most popular television network, shows three hours of soaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities.

“Although they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of reproduction, they describe the values of middle and upper class-not many children, different

attitudes towards sex, women working,” says Martine, “ They sent this image to all parts of Brazil and made people conscious of other patterns of behavior and other values, which were put into a very attractive package.”

Meanwhile, the family plans tried to encourage the poor to become consumers. “ This led to a great change in consumption patterns and consumption,” says Martine.

24.How has Brazil reduced population growth?

A. By introducing the high life in big cities.

B. By learning from others.

C. By developing TV programs.

26.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

A.Many Third World countries tried to learn from Brazil.

B.The increase in the birth rate in Brazil is the smallest in the world.

C.The desire for consumption helps reduce the birth rate.

D.Soap operas played a less useful role than the family plans in birth control.

27.What led to great changes in Brazilian consumption patterns and consumption?

A. The soap operas.

B. The family plans.

C. The life of upper class.

D. The attitude towards life.

Unhappiness with one’s appearance is common, but for Koreans perhaps more than any other countries.

Remarkably, one in five South Korean women has had some form of cosmetic(美容的)surgery, compared to around one in 20 in the U.S., according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

A powerful Korean pop culture over the past two or three decades has made Korean women equate (等同)beauty with professional and economic success.

Due to the rise of Korean pop culture, many Korean women, especially teens, are attracted by some famous singers’ small faces, large eyes and tiny noses. They welcome the idea of an operation to look like their favorite idols. Thus, cosmetic surgery has become a nationwide obsession (迷恋) in South Korea.

At the same time, Korean women suffer a strong beauty pressure. In South Korea, women need to meet the cultural expectations of being beautiful and attractive.

There are strict rules about women’s appearance in the workplace. Job applicants, for example, are commonly required to submit a headshot (证件照)with their resume.

Beauty is prized almost everywhere in the world, but in South Korea its value is very important. South Korean employers examine the looks of the applicants-in search for physical attractiveness -in addition to their professional qualifications.

For a woman to be capable in South Korea, it’s not enough just to have a certain skill set. You have to be beautiful as well. After the Korean economic crisis in 1997, competition for jobs led to the surgery boom; people try to get a leg up in the job market any way they can.

Companies actually don’t like to hire people who have had eye and nose surgery, but they still only hire pretty people. Because of this, parents let children have surgery even younger so it looks more natural as they mature.

32.What has made Korean women equate beauty with professional and economic success?

A. The marriage.

B. The Korean pop culture.

C. The competition for jobs.

D. The custom.

33.What are the cultural expectations for women in South Korea?

A. Women should be beautiful and attractive.

B. Women should be professional.

C. Women should be as skillful as men.

D. Women should earn the same money as men.

34. What has the competition for jobs after the 1997 Korean economic crisis resulted in?

A.The training center of work.

B. The boom in the foreign language.

C. The boom in make-up lessons.

D. The boom in cosmetic surgery.

35.What’s the best title of the text?

A. South Korean pop culture.

B. How to apply for jobs.

C. Korea’s crazy plastic surgery obsession.

D. Competition for jobs in Korea.

Text 10

Good morning and welcome to the BBC news special.

Have you ever heard of a four-year-old college student? But this is true of NIcholas Macmabon, who is now studying at college because he is too clever for school.

Nicholas spoke well before he was one. At eighteen months he took telephone messages for his parents. At two he began to learn French. The strange thing about Nicholas is that he taught himself to read before he could speak.

His parents knew immediately that he could read. When he could speak, he corrected his spelling. 大一期末考试英语试题

01 Passage 1 Hypnotism (催眠术) is very old. Thousands of years ago people started to use it in Egypt. The use of hypnotism has grown very much since that time. Today, doctors and scientists are in almost every country hypnotize people to help them with their problems. What is hypnotism, and how does it work? Many people think that a hypnotist puts people to sleep. Then he makes the hypnotized people do strange things. This is not what a hypnotist does. Hypnotism is really just a way to relax the mind and body. What are some of the uses of hypnotism? We go to a hypnotist because w e have a problem. The problem makes us unhappy. The hypnotist asks us to think hard about something and relax. When we are relaxed, t he hypnotist gives us some ideas to help us with our problems. Hypnotism can help people to remember things. The police sometimes ask hypnotists to help them. For example, a man sees an accident. He forgets the license number of the car he sees. If he is hypnotized he may remember it. The police can then find the car and catch the driver. People who are hypnotized can also make mistakes or say something that isn't true. People remember what they think they saw. That may not be what really happened. The police don't hypnotize people who do something wrong. Why not? People who are hypnotized may say something that isn't true. A person who has done something bad has a good reason to say something that isn't true. 1. Hypnotist helps people by ____. [A] putting them to sleep [B] helping them to get relaxed [C] offering his ideas about their problems [D] making them forget their problems 2. When hypnotized, some people may say something that is not true, because ____. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?____ [A] Hypnotism is very different form what it used to be. [B] When a person is hypnotized, his body gets relaxed, while his mind works hard. [C] Hypnotism is much more widely used today than it was thousands of years ago. [D] When hypnotized, a person will do something strange. 4. The passage mainly talks about ____.

A Hotel rooms come in a variety of styles and price ranges. Despite differences m decoration and price, one thing most hotels have in common is a set of rules. Failure to obey these rules can result in fees or fines to cover hotel room damages, removal from the hotel or possibly even arrest. Smoking Some hotels are completely non-smoking. Some hotels designate smoking and non-smoking rooms. If you smoke in a non-smoking room, you will likely be fined hundreds of dollars and possibly asked to leave. Number of Guests Most regular hotel rooms are designed for two adults. If you have more than two people staying in the room, the hotel will likely charge an additional fee for each extra guest, though some hotels let children stay free. Do not put more than four adults in the room unless the hotels policy permits that many people. Or you might be fined or removed from the hotel Hotel Reservations Requirements Most hotels require a major credit card to reserve the room. You can pay cash at the end of your stay, but do not be surprised if there is a temporary charge on your card for a few days after your stay. Most hotels authorize a security deposit on your card to cover any possible damages to the room. Once the hotel confirms that the room is undamaged and that you do not break any hotel policies, your security deposit will be refunded. Breaking the Law You cannot break the law in your hotel room, just as you cannot break the law in your own home or in public. Do not do drugs or commit any other criminal act in the hotel room. If you do, you will likely be arrested. Noise Most hotels have a noise policy you must obey. If you are being too loud you will usually get a warning. If the noise continues and more complaints are issued, you will likely be kicked out of the hotel, regardless of what time it is. 21. What is the main purpose of this passage?
