Introduction

With iSCSI storage area networks (SANs) gaining in popularity and marketshare, the ability to boot devices from SAN storage has become an often requested feature enabling solutions such as bare-metal deployments, virtualization of operating system storage, server consolidation, blade server architectures, and disaster recovery.

There are multiple techniques today that allow users to boot a device from a WinTarget Disk (LUN). iSCSI Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) from vendors such as QLogic and Adaptec have firmware-based boot functionality that interoperates with WinTarget?. emBoot’s recently released netBoot/i network boot software used with standard network adapters provides a software-based option for booting a device from the WinTarget SAN.

This document provides basic step-by-step instructions for configuring WinTarget to use netBoot/i for iSCSI booting. For information about netBoot/i such as system requirements, supported network adapters, compatibility, release notes, technical support, etc., please visit https://www.doczj.com/doc/0b16249708.html,.

The diagram below illustrates the network architecture used throughout this document. Note that the netBoot/i Manager software can be installed on the WinTarget server to simplify the hardware requirement.

Configure WinTarget

Create Host Entry

The steps below guide you through the process of adding the client to WinTarget to allow it access to the storage services. This procedure must be performed on the WinTarget server.

1. Launch WinTarget Console.

2. Select Hosts node in the left-hand pane. Right click and select New Host from the context

menu.

3. Click Next on the Welcome page of the wizard to continue.

4. Enter a name that will uniquely identify the client. You can also optionally enter a description for

easier identification of the host. Click Next.

5. On the Identification Methods page, click Advanced. The Host Identification page appears.

Click Add.

6. Select MAC Address from the drop down list. Then enter the MAC address of the client

machine that is connecting to WinTarget. Use the following format for the MAC address: xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx. Click OK to dismiss the dialog. Click Next to continue.

7. Click Finish to complete the operation.

8. The new host appears in the left-hand pane. Right click on the new host and select Properties

from the context menu. The properties notebook displays. Make a note of the Target IQN. Click Cancel to dismiss the notebook.

Create WinTarget Disk

The sequence of steps below creates a WinTarget Disk that is going to be used by the client for iSCSI booting. This is performed on the WinTarget server.

1. Select the Devices node in the left-hand pane. Right click and select Create WinTarget Disk

from the context menu.

2. Click Next on the Welcome page to begin.

3. On the Select Type page, select Create WinTarget Disk from a file radio button. Click Next

to continue.

4. On the Specify File page, enter the full path of the file to be used as the WinTarget Disk. If the

file does not exist, WinTarget automatically creates one when the wizard completes. Click Next.

5. On the Select Size page, specify a size for the WinTarget Disk. Specify a size that is the same

as the client’s current operating system partition. Click Next.

6. Enter a description for the WinTarget Disk (optional). Click Next.

7. On the Assigned To page, click Add. The Select Host dialog appears. Select the host created

in the Create Host Entry section and click OK. Click Next to continue the wizard.

8. Click Finish to create the WinTarget Disk and assign it to the specified host.

Configure netBoot/i

Add netBoot/i Client

The following guides you through the process of adding the client to the netBoot/i Manager. This sequence of steps is performed on the netBoot/i server.

1. Launch netBoot/i Manager. Select the Client node in the left-hand pane.

2. Right click and select Add Client from the context menu.

3. On the General Information page enter the client computer name and MAC address of the NIC.

Specify the MAC address using xxxxxxxxxxxx format. Click Next.

4. On the iSCSI Boot page enter the IP address of the WinTarget computer as the portal. For

Target, enter the Target IQN of the host entry created in the Create Host Entry section.

5. For Boot option, select Local Hard Disk as the boot option. For more information on configuring

netBoot/i options and other settings please refer to netBoot/i help file.

Initialize WinTarget Disk

The steps below prepares a WinTarget Disk to be used as an iSCSI boot device. It is performed on the client computer.

1. Restart the client computer.

2. During boot, enter the system BIOS and configure the NIC as the first boot device.

3. Save the changes and restart.

4. Login to the netBoot/i client machine and launch the Computer Management console.

5. Expand the Storage node and select Disk Management item.

6. The Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard appears; follow the instructions on the wizard to

initialize the new iSCSI disk device.

7. When the initialization is complete, create a new partition on the device by right clicking on the

unallocated space and select New Partition from the context menu. Follow the instructions on the wizard to create a new primary partition.

8. Mark the new partition as active by right clicking the new partition and select Mark Partition as

Active from the context menu. Close the Computer Management console when completed.

9. The WinTarget Disk is now ready for use. Use the netBoot/i System Copy utility to copy the

operating system to this newly created drive. Shutdown the computer after the file copy

completes.

Boot from iSCSI Disk

Now that the WinTarget Disk contains the image of the operating system drive, the steps below guides you through the process of booting the client computer from the WinTarget Disk. This procedure is performed on the netBoot/i server.

1. Launch netBoot/i Manager and select the client node in the left-hand pane.

2. Select the client and right click to display the context menu. Select the Boot Device -> iSCSI

Hard Disk option.

3. Restart the client computer.
