Topic One: College Culture

The similarities and dissimilarities between Oxford and Cambridge Similarities between Oxford and Cambridge

The students who attended either Oxford or Cambridge Universities set an intellectual standard that contrasted markedly with the norm of Medieval England. Today both Universities are internationally renowned centres for teaching and research, attracting students and scholars from all over the world.

Oxford and Cambridge both have:

well-regarded publishing houses (Oxford University Press and Cambridge University Press)

botanical gardens (University of Oxford Botanic Garden and Cambridge University Botanic Gar

den)

museums (the Ashmolean and the Fitzwilliam)

legal deposit libraries (the Bodleian and the Cambridge University Library)

debating societies (the Oxford Union and the Cambridge Union)

business schools (the Sa?d Business School and the Judge Business School)

science parks (Oxford Science Park and Cambridge Science Park)

theatrical societies and groups (the Oxford University Dramatic Society and The Oxford Revue, the Cambridge Footlights and the Marlowe Society)

Oxford and Cambridge also share a common collegiate structure: each university has more tha n 30 semi-autonomous residential colleges (see Colleges of the University of Cambridge, Colleges of the University of Oxford), which provide the environments in which students live, work and sle ep.

Differences between Oxford and Cambridge

-Different cities

Oxford has a uniformity of building material, as a large proportion of the buildings are in the local sandstone. (Gorgeous architecture. I personally love the honey-coloured buildings.)

Cambridge, on the other hand, has little local stone, so the building material has been brought in from many different sources, resulting in a greater variety of character.

The river is a more prominent feature in Cambridge, flowing through the city centre rather than around it as it does at Oxford. (Some think Cambridge is prettier because of this.) Oxford is bigger, busier, and livelier.

Oxford is a city with a university attached, Cambridge is a university with a city attached. The college of Cambridge are far more spread out than the colleges of Oxford.

There is a somewhat common impression that Oxford is stronger in politics and the humanities, while Cambridge is stronger in the sciences and engineering. (Oxford has produced more Prime Ministers and Cambridge more Nobel Laureates.)

They have different courses, eg. Natural Sciences in Cambridge, separate sciences in Oxford, PPE in Oxford but not Cambridge etc.

Different traditions, eg. Oxford requires us to wear sub fusc for exams, which is not the case in Cambridge

-A bit of history:

The University of Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world, and the second-oldest surviving university in the world, with evidence of teaching as far back as 1096.

After disputes between students and Oxford townsfolk in 1209, some academics fled north-east to Cambridge, where they established what became the University of Cambridge.

Topic Two: Mixed Feelings

The mixed feelings you have towards uni life here in this campus

Curious. There are so many things remaining to be discovered in our campus. First time I went to sys-university and everything was quite new to me. I was curious about the teaching building, lakes and my uni life.

Exciting. It is the first time that I leaved my family. So I am quite exciting to learn to be independent.

However, I was discouraged by the food in our dining hall. I cann't understand that why the green peppers are so mild here. Sometimes I would feel homesick when I have lunch or so.

Challenging. I find that university life is quite different from my high school life. I have to learn about how to balance my study and student association's work. I should be a responsible and independent person. It challenges me a lot.

Topic Three: Crime Watch

The circumstances one would allow a stranger to enter the dorm

Campus is a bustling place. The Open University not only gives residents an opportunity to experience campus life, but also gives some criminals a chance to

get close to students. So if some strangers require entering your dorm, you should be careful.

Firstly, if the stranger can show you his or her ID card, and allow you to check it, you may let him or her in, after you make sure it is true.

Secondly, if there are enough people in your dorm, you may permit one or two strangers to enter your dorm after making sure they are not aggressive. People here can help you take the chance to stop them by calling the police or fighting with them.

Thirdly, if your dorm supervisor has informed you that someone will enter your dorm, after check this identity with your supervisor, you can allow him to enter your dorm.

Last but not least, no matter where you are, the first thing you should do is to take care of your personal safety.

Topic Four: News 24/7

The most interesting/ridiculous campus news concerning this university The most ridiculous campus news is that our former president left our university several days before our university's 90th birthday. It was hard to imagine because he left in a sudden. Students are shocked to find that after they took a bath, they lost their president. It also meant that our university had to have a birthday without a president which sounded to be a sad story. It was very ridiculous. I don't understand why he left so urgently. And it seems that we are in lack of president for about 2 months. So SYS-magic university turns into SYS-no president university.

Topic Five: The World at War

The change s wars may have in young people’s life

Gone are the days when most wars were fought between countries’ armies on a remote battlefield. The vast majority of modern conflicts take place within countries, not between them. Though wars changed a lot in many ways, they still have a great impact on young people’s life.

Wars can affect young people’s life physically. Young people may be hurt by the bombs and bullets of war. But some are recruited to become soldiers themselves and are placed directly in the firing line. When the heat of battle is over, landmines and unexploded ordinance can leave a deadly legacy for years.

Wars can affect young people emotionally. It adversely affects young people who are sent to fight in conflicts, and the effects on those who lose loved ones as collateral damage and experience the terror of battle first-hand can be worse.

War undermines the very foundations of young people's lives, destroying their homes, splintering their communities and breaking down their trust in peace.

One of the gravest effects of war is the way it disrupts and destroys young people’s education.

Yet education really is the best weapon against poverty and conflict.

Topic Six: Sporting Life

Your personal opinions toward extreme sports( Parkour/ Rock climbing /sky diving)

Extreme sports (also called action sports, aggro sports, and adventure sports) is a popular term for certain activities perceived as having a high level of inherent danger.

Advantages

1. These activities often involve speed, height, a high level of physical exertion, and highly specialized gear. There is no doubt that they can build you up.

2. It gives you the ability to overcome your fears and pains and reapply this to life as you must be able to control your mind. It also influences one's thought processes by enhancing self-confidence and critical thinking skills that allow one to overcome everyday physical and mental obstacles.

3. Most of extreme sports are related to the outside world. It teaches us to touch the world and interact with it, instead of being sheltered by it.

Dangerous

Extreme sports are physically and mentally demanding sports, ones that often test a participant's strength, endurance, agility and balance along with mental control.

For example Injuries Because parkour philosophy is about learning to control oneself in interaction with the environment, leading parkour experts tend to view physical injury as a deviation from true parkour.

Injuries in rock climbing are mainly sports injuries that occur due to falls or overuse. Injuries due to falls are relatively uncommon; the vast majority of injuries result from overuse, most often occurring in the fingers, elbows, and shoulders. Such injuries are often no worse than torn calluses, cuts, burns and bruises. However, overuse symptoms, if ignored, may lead to permanent damage especially to tendons, tendon sheaths, ligaments, and

capsules. Injuries from lead climbing are common.

Deaths

You can participate in them, but make sure you are safe.

Will you try some extreme sports? What kind will you try and why?

Topic Seven: Animal Planet

What you think of animal abuse

Animal abuse is not something good. There are many reported cases related to animal abuse which make people indignant, but they are just the tip of the iceberg. When we look at the animal abuse, mankind is put to shame.

It exposes human's selfish, because they base their happiness on animal's pain. Human being s are corrupted by power and overlook the right to live of animals. Some so-called civilized people torture animals in many different ways just for some stupid reasons. A dog is kicked because he is barking too much. A house cat is forced to live outdoors as it missed the litter box by a few inches. Foxes are killed to make a single fur coat. Minks are sacrificed to provide the soft fur for your mink coat. Despite shooting, beating, burning and animal fighting, people torture animals by using them for research purpose. And after they find a cure, animals are left to die and suffer. It's awful.

Humans are thought to be the most intelligent of all species. We have no right to torture the weaker creatures that inhabit the planet earth. Animals do not have a voice, and they do not need your sympathies. They need you to be their tongues, to act and stop this abuse. You can help to set up animal abuse laws, to rescue abused animals around you. All in all, let them be your friends and a person.

Topic Eight: Time off

The impacts western programs have on people in China

West has a great influence on china. It is demonstrated not only by the best-selling products around China, but also by the widely spread of western cultural which main represented by different programs.

1.dress and behavior. A recent Statistical data show that 80% of the fans of American TV show are Chinese youth. TV show has become an important part in their lives. People imitate their dress and behavior. It is interesting to find that many young people wear the same hats that appeared in the BBC’s “Sherlock” and say something like “Elementary, my dear Watson”

2.broaden people’s horizon. News presses like BBC and VOA have Broaden people’s knowledge view and update ideas. By watching TV shows, Chinese people will learn more about the difference cultures between the west and east. It will help them be a good citizen of the world.

3. corrupt young people’s lifes. “vulgar productions” and “money-worship” are full of US TV show, such as the famous TV pla y “Gossip girl “describe the decadent and wasteful lives of up-class in United Sates, this may makes the youth become impractical and money-oriented.

In a word, western programs have great impacts on people. I suggest people selecting them carefully, and see the culture difference objectively, learn the positive aspects from them and resist the negative influence.

Topic Nine:Charity & Volunteer work

Think of a volunteer work you once did and how you felt

When I was in high school, I attended a program which aimed at helping clerks to sort the books in our library. I had thought this job would be quite easy because it did not need you to be well trained. However I found this job was not as easy as I believed-----it needed you to be very careful. It was a monotonous job, you did the same thing again and again.

I gained a lot of things from it. I learned not to overlook jobs which seemed easy to be done. It helped me get along well with my co-workers and we enjoy our friendship till now. Last but not least, it reminds me that we should devote ourselves to the work which can help others.

Topic Ten: Science Fact or Science Fiction

The problems science or technology has brought to university students

1. study. Students are tend to spend more time in playing mobile phone and computers which means that less time would be spent in study, which obviously results in low grades.

2. health problem. And if you spend too much time on high technical products, you may be addicted to it. It does harm to your eyes and in the long term it may bring you health problems like backaches and so on.

3. communication problem. It is interested to find that many people who talk very actively online are unwilling to have face-to-face talk. One reason is that most of them find they have lost the ability to organize a conversation without typing.

4. social life is out of controlled. The biggest problem is that our life are controlled by high technology product. Most of the news and other information are delivered by the internet. We prefer to communicate online and we prefer to shop online, and we prefer to do everything online if possible. It makes me wonder whether it is good or not?

英语口语考试话题范例

What do you think is the most serious challenge of living in a big city? With the development of economy, the speed of urbanization of our country is faster and faster. The area of cities is larger and larger. More and more people crowd into cities, resulting in larger and larger population of citcities. The abundance of consumer goods in big city indeed bring us much convenience. However, there are also many challenges and pressures living in a big city. Such as crowded transport, dirty air, noisy street and so on. Among these challenges, I believe, the most serious one is the tense pace of life. To get enough consumer goods and live a happy life, We have to work every day to make money. We get up early in the morning and go to work in a hurry even no time to have breakfast. After a day,s busy work, we go home at night and go to sleep. We spend half of our time to work even forget to stop to enjoy our life. Sometimes I think that we are so stupid to devote ourselves to work and forget the purpose we work for. But most of time, we have to do so. So that is the reason for my view. Say something about the impact of horror films on young children. When it comes to horror films, opinions vary from person to person. It is the same to young children. I believe horror films have both positive and negative impact on young children, the point depend on the attitudes of children on horror films. Horror films indeed excite us greatly compared with other films. For children like horror films, watching horror films is an interesting adventure. Kids who always watch horror films would have more curiosity on the world and life. This results that children watching horror films have the spirit of exploration and innovation. However, for those timid and do not like horror films, watching horror films may make them have nightmares. What is worse, it may lead to psychological illness and make them more timid, resulting them afraid of trying unfamiliar things. So it is concluded that if children like horror films, they are admitted to watch them, if they do not like, do not force them to watch. What factors influence you most in your choice of a job? With the increasing of population of our country and the diversification of economy, it is becoming more and more difficult for our young to find a satisfactory job. Too many factors affect us to
