Most parents,I suppose, have had the experience of reading a bedtime story to their children. And they must have 1 how difficult it is to write a 2 children's book.Either the author has aimed too 3 ,so that the children can't follow what is in his (or more often, her)story, 4 the story seems to be talking to the readers.

Passage 1

On my voyage to Japan,I shared a cabin with Mr.Kelada.He was chatty and seemed too sure of himself.

One evening at dinner the passengers started talking about culture pearls(人工养殖珍珠)the Japanese were making,Mr.Kelada rushed the new topic:

“I'm going to Japan just to look into the Japanese pearl business.I'm in the trade and I know all the best pearls in the world. They'll never be able to get a culture pearl that an expert like me can't tell with half an eye.” He pointed to the chain that Mrs.Ramsay wore.“You take my word for it,Mrs.Ramsay, that chain you're wearing will never be worth a cent less than it is now.”

Mrs.Ramsay in her modest way flushed(脸红)a little and slipped the chain inside her dress.Mr.Ramsay leaned forward. He gave us all a look, and a smile shone in his eyes.“That's a pretty chain, isn't it?”

“I noticed it at once,” ans wered Mr.Kelada.“Gee,I said to myself, those are pearls all right.”

“I didn't buy it myself,of course.I'd be interested to know how much you think it cost.”

“Oh,in the trade somewhere round fifteen thousand dollars. But if it was bought on Fifth Avenue I shouldn't be surprised to hear that anything up to thirty thousand was paid for it.”

Mr.Ramsay smiled grimly.

“You'll be surprised to hear that Mrs.Ramsay bought that string at a department store the day before we left New York, for eighteen dollars.”

Mr.Kelada flushed.

“Nonsense. It's not only real, but it's as fine a string for its size as I've ever seen.”

“Will you bet(打赌)on it?I'll bet you a hundred dollars that it's imitation.”

“Done.”

“Oh,Elmer,you can't bet on a certainty,” said Mrs.Ramsay.

She had a little smile on her lips, and her tone was gently showing strong disagreement.“Can't I? If I get a chance of earn money like that I should be all sorts of a fool not to take it.”

“But how can it be proved?” she continued.“It's only my word against Mr.Kelada's”.

“Let me look at the chain, and if it's imitation,I'll tell you quickly enough.I can afford to lose a hundred dollars,” said Mr.Kelada.

“Take it off, dear.Let the gentleman look at it as much as he wants.”

Mrs.Ramsay hesitated a moment. She put her hands to the clasp(项链扣).

“I can't undo it,” she said.“Mr.Kelada will just have to take my word for it.”

I had a sudden suspicion that something unfortunate was about to occur, but I could think of nothing to say.

Mr.Ramsay jumped up.

“I'll undo it.”

He handed the chain to Mr.Kelada.The man took a magnifying glass from his pocket and closely examined it.A smile of triumph spread over his smooth and rather dark-coloured face.He handed back the chain. He was about to speak.Suddenly he caught sight of Mrs.Ramsay's face.It was so white that she looked as though she were about to faint. She was staring at him with wide and terrified eyes. They held a desperate appeal(恳求);it was so clear that I wondered why her husband did not see it.

Mr.Kelada stopped with his mouth open.He flushed deeply. You could almost see the effort he was making over himself.

“I was mistaken,” he said.“It's a very good imitation…” He handed Mr.Ramsay a hundred-dollar note without a word.I noticed that Mr.Kelada's hands were trembling.

Passage 1

Passage 2

“No man is an i sland,” wrote the poet John Donne several centuries ago.He was acknowledging one of our most distinctive characteristics:the fact that we are social animals whose behavior and personalities are shaped by the groups to which we belong.Throughout life, most of our daily activities are performed in the company of others.Whether our purpose is working, playing, raising a family, learning,or simply relaxing,we usually pursue it in groups, even if the group is as small as two or three people. Our need for human contacts is not merely a practical one;it is a deep psychological need as well.If people are deprived of the company of others for prolonged periods, mental breakdown is the usual result.Even the Geneva Convention(日内瓦公约),an international agreement that regulates the treatment of prisoners of war, recognizes this need.It regards solitary(孤独的)imprisonment for more than thirty days as a cruel form of torture(折磨).

In its strictest sense,a group is a collection of people interacting together in an orderly way on the basis of shared expectations about one another's behavior. As a result of this interaction, members feel a common sense of “belonging”.They distinguish members from nonmembers and expect certain kinds of behavior from outsiders.

山东自考英语二课文翻译

Unit 1 Text A How Difficult Is English? 英语有多难 Like the national push for Asian literacy (n.有文化,有教养,有读写能力)in Australia,就如澳大利亚在全国推行学亚洲语言一样,there has been foreign languages fervor[f??v?] in China,中国也掀起一股外语热,with English on top of the list. 在这股热潮中,英语高居榜首。English is not only taught at schools, colleges and universities, but also at evening classes,on radio and TV.不仅各级学校教英语,夜校、电台、电视台也都设有英语课程。Parents hire private tutors for their school children;父母为学龄的孩子聘请英语家教,adult English learners would sacrifice the weekend at an English corner in a public park practicing their spoken English with peop1e of the same interest and determination. 成年英语学习者会牺牲周末休息日,到公园参加英语角,与志趣相投的英语学习者练习口语。Is English such a difficult language that it really demands people to invest a large amount of time and energy before it is mastered ? 英语真的有这么难,需要人们投入大量的时间和精力才能掌握吗? The answer,if I am asked to offer,is undoubtedly, yes.如果我被问及这个问题,那么毫无疑问,我的答案是:是的。From my personal experience, 从我个人的经验来看,I think learning English means far more than learning its pronunciation, its grammatical rules, its words, etc.英语学习不仅仅是学习英语发音、语法规则、词汇等,It involves learning everything about the countries where it is used and the people who use it.它包括学习与使用该语言的国家和民族有关的所有内容。Without such a complete understanding of the language, 对英语没有这样全面的理解,the English a foreigner speaks will inevitably sound strange or even unintelligible though there is not anything wrong with his pronunciation, sentence structure and the words he uses.即使发音、句子结构、措辞毫无错误,一个外国人所讲的英语也难免听起来稀奇古怪甚至难以理解。The social customs and habits of the English-speaking people contribute a lot to the difficulty a foreigner has in learning it.讲英语民族者的社会风俗习惯增加了外国人学习英语的难度。Take the Chinese English learners for example.以学英语的中国人为例," Hello "and "Good morning" may sound a little bit simple to Chinese people."你好"和"早上好"是非常简单的。It is totally beyond the understanding of a Chinese English learner that native English speakers would be annoyed when they're addressed "Where are you going?",which is a commonly used addressing among the Chinese."你去哪儿?"是中国人常用的问候语,若英语母语者被问及"你去哪儿?",他们会因此感到不悦,这一点让中国的英语学习者大为不解。Is there anything wrong with the English sentence structure ? 这个英语句子结构不对吗? Of course not.当然不是。It takes quite some time for a Chinese English learner to understand the western concept of privacy being violated in this address. 学英语的中国人得费点儿时间才能理解这一问候语侵犯了西方人的隐私。By the same token,同样,"Have you eaten?"(which is another addressing term the Chinese people usually use)will sound to native English speakers that the Chinese are so hospitable that they invite people to meals off-handedly. 英语母语者听到"你吃了吗?"(中国人常用的另外一个问候语),会觉得中国人非常好客,会在事先毫无准备的情况下请人吃饭。Meanwhile, the Chinese would be shocked to hear,"Oh,it's very nice of you. When?",if the addressee happens to have a craving for Chinese cooking and has not had his dinner yet.如果听话者此刻正希望品尝一下中国美食,又碰巧没有吃饭,他会回答"太好了,什么时候?",中国人为此也会大吃一惊。 "We can say we are going to have chicken for dinner. Why can't we say pig, bull or sheep for dinner instead of pork, beef or mutton?" Chinese English learners may raise such questions.中国的英语学习者可能会这样问:"我们可以说吃鸡,为什么不能说吃猪、吃牛、吃羊,而要说吃猪肉、牛肉、羊肉呢?"Figuring out the reasons for the peculiar English vocabulary is no easy task for Chinese English learners.对学习英语的中国人来说,为这些特殊的英语词汇找出理由并非易事。But the problem is that memorizing English words mechanically would be devastating and inefficient if they did not know what had happened in British history.问题在于如果不懂英国历史,死记硬背英语单词毫无效率。Thus learning English(and other languages as well)involves learning the history of the countries where it is spoken.所以说,学英语(其他语言亦如此)还包括学习使用该语言国家的历史知识。A task of this kind is more difficult for Chinese English learners than for people who speak

What are the differences between Chinese and American learning ways? Which one do you prefer, why? Chinese learning way is show children exactly what to do or how to do, and teaching by holding children’s hand. American learning way is making children learn to think by himself, to solve problems on his own and even to discover new problems, for which creative solutions are wanted. It’s value originality and independence more than the Chinese do. In my perspective, I prefer tradition Chinese learning way. There are two reasons for it. First, children can come back for more and happier. He can know the solution immediately and learn effetely. Second, I was taught by this tradition Chinese way, and I think my learning ability is well now. 2. How do you comment on Karl Green's way of life? He helps a lot of people and feels connect. He is psychological satisfaction. 3. What do you think causes the generation gap, and how to solve this problem? Several reasons can account for this common phenomenon. Firstly, the gap between p arents and teenagers is a little big. That’s to say, parents are mutual and old-fashioned while teenagers are quite active, passive and in style. Therefore, it’s normal that parent s and teenagers are both very hard to find the common language. Second, the most important reason is that parents and teenagers are usually not trying to under stand each other. Just like Heidi’s father get with on his children.Thirdly, the children want to be more independent, but the parents still want to take children under their wings. I think we should build a bridge between parents and children.
