The University of Birmingham is the first excellent UK Russell Group university to announce that it will accept the "Gaokao" exam for high-flying Chinese students wishing to join its undergraduate courses in 2019. High school students who complete the "National Higher Education Entrance Examination", or Gaokao, with top grades will be able to apply for direct entry onto Birmingham degree programmes without first completing a foundation year which is a routine for the freshman.

Gaokao is usually taken by students in their last year of senior high school and, every year, each province in China sets the grades required to gain admission to its universities. It is usually held across China in early June. Students are tested in Chinese, Mathematics, a Foreign Language and social sciences or natural sciences.

University of Birmingham Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir David Eastwood said: "The University of Birmingham has been challenging and developing great minds for more than a century. We welcome people from around the globe to study at Birmingham and Chinese students form an integral part of our education and research community. We are further opening access to Birmingham's wealth of education opportunities for the brightest and most dedicated Chinese students by accepting this strict and important qualification. I look forward to welcoming these high-flying students to the University of Birmingham. "

Gaokao is increasingly accepted by universities in Australia, the USA, Canada and mainland Europe. Birmingham will only be considering high quality students who achieve a minimum 80% Gaokao score and meet additional academic and English language requirements.

Professor J on Frampton, Director of the University of Birmingham's China Institute said:" The University of Birmingham has a long history of educating students from China and one of our most famous graduates is Li Siguang-the founding father of Chinese geology. I am delighted that the University is now accepting the Gaokao. This gives the brightest and best Chinese students an opportunity to move straight into the first year of our undergraduate programmes and experience the benefits of studying at a global Top 100 university, such as Birmingham. In the future those who are taking care of old people may get help from the house itself.

Over the last few years, new technology, such as the Internet, Wi-Fi and flat TV screens, has changed our homes and the way that we live. Now, another technology revolution is happening.

A new project at the University of Hertfordshire wants to create a home that monitors people living in it who are elderly.

The researchers have developed a wristband device(装置)which helps us to watch the elderly person who is wearing it. The device collects information to see if the person has fallen or has wandered away from where he or she should be.

The assisted-living project is part of the university's wider Interhome project, which is the development of a smart house. The house remembers the habits of the person who lives there and it uses very low amounts of energy. The Interhome team hope that offering this service will

help take care of the elderly. They say, "It's very important that these technologies are there to help and support and not replace any of the existing services."

The Interhome is not just a research method. It's also a way for students from different scientific backgrounds to learn and develop technology. The university uses the latest technology to help students get experience by developing new hardware and software themselves. The team includes design, engineering and computer science students working together.

The other day I was shopping at the local Chinese grocery store. There was a line at the fish counter, but only one staff person was there to take care of the customers. Some customers ordered quite an amount of fish for that staff person to work on. At last I was the second in line. All I wanted was a couple of crabs and should get out of there in no time.

Noticing it was very busy at the fish counter, another staff person came over to help. I was ready to be served, but the staff person went to the end of the line and began to help a couple of ladies with snail (蜗牛). The customers in front of me, being served, turned around and looked at me sympathetically and the cu stomer behind me called to the staff person, “You should start here,” pointing at me. He was, well, ignored.

If someone asked me, "What is the most important rule to follow in America?" I would reply without hesitation. "Wait your turn at all times." Wherever you go here in this country, you will find people waiting in a line quietly to get anything: whether in the supermarkets, department stores, bus stops, or gas stations, it's just a matter of waiting your turn. In a larger sense, "wait your turn" is more than just a guideline — it is a very basic rule that reflects the fundamental value of the western cultures. But in some situations your turn does not always come based on when you get there and how long you have waited in line, just like my case at the store. Even though this did not often happen, it did make me feel upset.

(1)What happened to the author at the store?

A.He was ill-treated by a customer.

B.He wasn't served upon his order.

C.He was asked to be served later.

D.He was asked to do others a favor.

(2)What does the underlined word "this" in the last paragraph refer to?

A.His belief.

B.His culture.

C.His experience.

D.His rule.

(3)Why did the author write the text?

A.To emphasize his kindness to others.

B.To introduce some western cultures to us.

C.To express his belief and his feeling.

D.To show his disbelief in Queuing Rule.

【答案】(1)B

(2)C

(3)C

根据第二段中的“I was ready to be served, but the staff person went to the end of the line and began to help a couple of ladies with snail (蜗牛).”

根据最后一段中的“But in some situations your turn does not always come based on when you get there and how long you have waited in line, just like my case at the store.”

再根据最后一段中的“Even though this did not often happen, it did make me feel upset.”

A decent sized home can cost around $139000, which is relatively cheap in relation to homes in the United States.

Every day I see advertisements in the newspapers and on the buses claiming that it is easy and quick to learn English. There is even a reference to William Shakespeare or Charles Dickens to

encourage learners even more. When I see advertisements like this, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. But many people must believe these ridiculous claims, or else the advertisements would not appear.

Of course it is clear that students who go to England to learn English have a great advantage over others, but too many cannot afford to do so. Some go to the opposite extreme and think they can teach themselves at home with dictionaries. But it is wrong to assume that each word in English has a precise equivalent in another language, let alone produces good pronunciation and intonation.

Most teaching is still based on behaviorist psychology. Behaviorists are fond of making students repeat phrases and making sentences. If we were parrots or chimpanzees, these methods might be successful. A large number of theorists seem to think it is a pity we aren't, because it would make it easier to use their methods.

In my personal opinion, no one can ever learn to speak English or any other language unless he is interested in it. Human beings, unlike parrots and chimpanzees, do not like making noises unless they understand what the noises mean and can relate them to their own lives. It is worth remembering that language is a means of communication. What they listen to and read cannot be a formula. It must be real.

There is another relevant point worth mentioning here. We need other people to talk to and listen to when we communicate. They can work with us and practice the unfamiliar forms with us in real situations, talking to each other about real life language.

(1)Many people believe advertisements in the newspapers and on the buses probably because .

A. they are encouraged by William Shakespeare or Charles Dickens

B. they are eager to learn and then believe them

C. the ways advertised can help them to save time and efforts

D. the ways advertised prove effective and helpful

(2)What may behaviorists argue towards English learning?

A. Human beings make more interesting noises than parrots and chimpanzees.

B. Human beings should relate their speech to their own lives.

C. Language is a formula with lots of repetitions and practices.

D. Language is a means of communication.

(3)What opinion does the author hold?

A. A quick method that suits all the students does exist.

B. English can be mastered within a very short period of time.

C. Each word in English has a precise equivalent in another language.

D. No one can learn English well without being interested in it.

(4)What ways of learning is suggested by the author?

A. Study abroad.

B. Learn communicatively and situationally.

C. Follow the behaviorists' approach.

D. Teach oneself at home with dictionaries.

【答案】(1)B

(2)C

(3)D

They can work with us and practice the unfamiliar forms with us in real situations, talking to each other about real life language.”

The human brain remembers negative experiences more easily than positive ones. Our brains have developed this way because threats, like dangerous animals, had a more immediate effect on our ancestors' survival compared to positive things like food or shelter. As a result, you likely know what makes you unhappy, but do you know what makes you happy?

Research suggests that our level of happiness depends partly on factors we cannot control—our genes and our life circumstances. But our level of happiness is also shaped by the choices we make. If you've been chasing wealth, fame, good looks, material things and power, you may be looking for happiness in all the wrong places. Psychologists suggest that the following habits make people happier.

People who form close relationships tend to be happier than those who do not. The number of friends we have is not important. What matters is the quality of our relationships. Relationships that bring happiness usually involve the sharing of feelings, mutual respect, acceptance, trust and fun.

People who exercise regularly improve both their physical and mental well being. Some

research has shown that exercise can be as effective as medication in treating depression.

When we are so interested in an activity we enjoy that we lose track of time, we are in a state of flow. The activity could be making art, playing piano, surfing, or playing a game. People who experience flow in their work or hobbies tend to be happier.

People are more likely to be happy if they know what their strengths are and use them regularly, People who set goals and use their strengths to achieve them tend to be happier. People are especially happy when they can use their strengths to serve the greater good. People who think positively by being grateful, mindful and optimistic are more likely to be happy. Being grateful means being thankful, Bejing mindful means being open to, focusing on and enjoying the experiences of the present moment. Being optimistic means being hopeful about the future.

(1)Why does the human brain remember negative things more easily?

A. Negative things are easy to remember.

B. Dangerous wild animals are a threat to us.

C. Our ancestors had no enough food for living.

D. Negative things tend to affect human survival immediately.

(2)How does the author like looking for happiness in material things?

A. Uncertain.

B. Opposed.

C. Supportive.

D. Optimistic.

(3)What does the author suggest us in the last paragraph?

A. Enjoying our life and work.

B. Leading a happy life each day.

C. Being positive in our life and work.

D. Thinking more about the future.

(4)What does this text mainly tell us?

A. The factors that make people happy.

B. How to remember positive things easily.

C. The habits which people form in their life.

D. Why people remember negative things easily.

【答案】(1)D

(2)B

(3)C

I stood in a noisy group of sixth grade students, waiting for the answer to our burning question: What type of crazy tie would Mr. Miller be wearing today?

Our teacher walked around the comer with a GREEN ELEPHANT TIE that matched his large elephant coffee cup! Oh, the satisfaction in our young hearts—a green elephant tie!

With his glasses at the tip of his nose, he greeted us cheerfully, “Good morning, folks!” He was strange and unique and he brightened every day for us. He was the most dynamic teacher I had ever met.

I loved music, so I remember how excited I was when he said he was going to give us music lessons. But when he turned on the music, my classmates and I slowly turned our heads toward the sound of… Feter Paul and Mary singing “If I Had a Hammer”.

I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.

War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming, “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.

The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through phone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy rose up in my heart.

Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn't notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”

She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. So we both got tired of each other.

文章最后一段we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.

Scientists found that sleeping considerably improves our creativity. After taking a nap people are able to think faster and put more imagination into their thinking. Besides, if we dream, the thinking abilities are improved even more.

Researchers consider that sleeping on a problem in most cases leads to elucidation(解释). They say when a person enters a phase called Rapid Eye Movement (REM) during sleep, it increases the effect. Such phase takes place right before we awake and according to scientists it helps our brain make links between unrelated subjects.

In the study, led by Professor Sara Mednick, scientists made a conclusion that the REM was "important for assimilating(消化) new information into past experience" in order to find solutions to creative problems.

Prof. Mednick is a psychiatrist at the University of California. Her study involved the analysis of 77 adults. Each participant was given several word-associated creative tasks. All tasks were given in the morning, with participants being shown a number of groups of 3 words, for example: cookie, heart and sixteen. They were asked to come up with a word that would be associated with all three given terms—like sweet. Sometime later, after some participants were allowed to sleep, they were asked to perform the same tasks and some new ones. It is worth mentioning that while some people slept, researchers used brain scans to see the type of sleep each participant entered.

When given the same tasks, participants, who took a nap, were able to give more varied solutions, some of which were much better than they gave earlier. But when given new tasks, researchers found that those who entered REM sleep had a 40 percent better result compared to the performance they showed in the morning.

(1)What does "it" refer to in the second paragraph?

A. The effect.

B. REM.

C. Sleep.

D. A problem.

(2)Why do the researchers study the REM?

A. Because REM takes place just after you sleep.

B. Because REM can store more information.

C. Because REM can help find creative solutions

D. Because REM can make a creative invention.

(3)What can we know from this passage?

A. Taking a short nap is good for your thinking during the day.

B. Sleeping has three processes which is good for creativity.

C. Each adult was allowed to sleep after the task was given.

D. REM is a process taking place right after we awake when we nap.

(4)The important stage in the study is________.

A. to think of a creative word

B. to show a group of 3 words

C. to give participants time to think

D. to let some participants sleep for a while

用这种阅读方法回答who、what、when、where之类的问题最为有效。 2.

(What is the idea?What are facts?)

Children are always boasting.They say things like“My Dad's car is bigger than your Dad's,”“My Mom is smarter than yours.”and“My family has more money than yours.” The word“boasting” means __B___ A.骄傲 B.吹牛 C.顽皮 D.幼稚 Many plants and animals are going extinct.Mammoths,which are related(有关联的) with Asia elephants,are now extinct.There are no mammoths in the world today. 1.A mammoth is a kind of _C___. A.plant B.bird C.animal D.tree 2.The word extinct means _C_ A.出现 B.危险 C.灭绝

对小学英语考试常见题型的讲解及做题技巧,失分薄弱环节的讲解 1.针对四年级学生知识或能力系统和学生的认知规律确定易错题。 2.试题包括基础知识和能力题两大类。 3.每道题包括“典题呈现”“解题分析”“参考答案”“变式突破”四个方式 4.易错题型来源于平时的教学实践,注重所选易错题例的典型性和针对性,对 学生有启发和帮助。 5.注重所选易错题型应呈现的多样性。 小学英语考试的目的是什么?考的方式与内容与课程设置理念有无相悖?如果每个人能多思考这样的问题,我想无论从教学思想上还是评价体系上更上一层楼,即使是在应试教育的大气候下也能把握些许平衡 [学生要通过大量做卷子,过分钻研题型本身,那考试就失去意义了] 听力: 辨音: 这种题型考察的目的是什么?我一直很疑惑。(有同行说这些题目以后不考了,但总要思考下吧) 如果是考察学生对单词是否读准了,那告诉你,10个有8个是没问题的,exercise这个单词有点复杂,也许有很多学生对里面的单个音吃不准,但是要整体认读对,是不难的,但问题也就在这里,有很多学生会读整个单词,但不知道具体每个字母在这个单词里读什么音,这点也许那些高中,大学老师觉得很不可思议,但是小学老师绝对深有感触,我在训练直拼的时候就发现有几个很有这样问题的学生,我就问他big种的I到底发什么音,但是在他嘴里出来的是莫名其妙[e];

I’m sorry to hear that的语感提醒,那还是会知道hear这个单词的,你要学生默写“来这里”的“这里”,也是不难的事情here. Does he…? Are you…? Is your father….?

考研英语阅读理解模拟试题及答案(三) Passage 11 Dream is a story that a personwatchesor even takes part in during sleep. Dream events are imaginary, but they are related to real experiences and needs in the dreamer's life. They seem real while they are taking place. Some dreams are pleasant, others are annoying, and still others are frightening. Everyone dreams, but some persons never recall dreaming. Others remember only a little about a dream they had just before awakening and nothing about earlier dreams. No one recalls all his dreams. Dreams involve little logical thought. In most dreams, the dreamer cannot control what happens to him. The story may be confusing, and things happen that would not happen in real life. People see in most dreams, but they may also hear, smell, touch, and taste in their dreams. Most dreams occur in color. but persons who have been blind since birth do not see at all in dreams. Dreams are a product of the sleeper's mind. They

From the passage,we learn that___.答案为B: The rainforest people have done some- thing to protect their home. An illness had kept the boy home和下文写给Rick的信中可以猜测出意为“去世”。

Today is Sunday. It's Betty's birthday. She is twelve years old. She is at home with her parents now. They're going to have a birthday party. Her father is decorating the house. Her mother is making the birthday cake. Betty is washing some apples, pears and grapes. All of them are very busy. The party will start at seven o'clock in the evening. Betty's friends, Kate, Joan, Mike, Tom, Rose and Jack will come to the party. They will give Betty some presents. The children are going to sing and dance at the party. Betty's mother will play the piano for them. Betty's father will take photos of them. I think they will have a good time at the party. (1)Today is Betty's birthday. (2)Betty's father is making the birthday cake now.

Dear Mum, How are you? Every day I had fun with my cousins. On Monday we went to a restaurant. We ate good food. On Tuesday we went to a park. We sang and danced. On Wednesday we played ping-pong. On Thursday we climbed a mountain. We took many pictures. Tomorrow I'll be back home! Miss you and dad. Love. John

Blue Lightning Sally loved cars more than anything else. This spring she thought of building a go-kart to enter for the Go-Go Race. So she asked her dad for help. "Well," he said. "How about this: you do some research first and then come back to me with a design." A week later, Sally brought her notes and drawings to Dad. She named her go-kart "Blue Lightning". Dad looked over her work, thinking. "Well, that's interesting," he said. "Have a try. Just build Blue Lightning as you've designed." Over three weekends of hard work, Sally turned her design into a real, working go-kart and painted it light blue. Dad asked her to take it for a test drive. Sally agreed. After she did that, Sally drove back to Dad. "Well," she said. "Now I know why you wanted me to have a test drive." "Oh, do you?" he said. "Please share." "When I drove fast, there was a lot of pushback," she said. "I think it's because of the lightning bolt (闪电) shape." "Very good!" Dad said. "So, why didn't you tell me about that problem in the first place?" Sally asked. Dad laughed. "Where's the fun in that? If you give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. But if you teach a man to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime." Sally said, "I see. Anyway, designing is half the fun!" Dad smiled. "Good. Sometimes, learning happens during the process. We learn how to do something right by doing it a few times first and making mistakes along the way." That encouraged Sally and she worked even harder. When she showed Dad her new go-kart, he nodded with pride. Finally came the race. Sally wasn't worried about whether she would win—in her mind, she had already won, by building something better than ever before. (1)Sally thought of building a go-kart to ________. A. practice driving B. enter for a race C. play with friends D. do some research (2)What did Sally's dad ask her to do after she built the go-kart? A. To have a test drive. B. To take a good rest. C. To give it a cool name. D. To paint it light blue.
