Passage 1

LONDON — The world is losing the battle against diabetes as the number of people estimated to be living with the disease soars to a record high of 382 million this year, medical experts said on Thursday.

The vast majority have type 2 diabetes - the kind linked to obesity and lack of exercise - and the epidemic is spreading as more people in the developing world adopt Western, urban lifestyles.

The latest estimate from the International Diabetes Federation is equivalent to a global prevalence rate of 8.4 percent of the adult population and compares to 371 million cases in 2012.

By 2035, the organization predicts the number of cases will have soared by 55 percent to 592 million.

“The battle to protect people from diabetes and its disabling, life-threatening complications is being lost,” the federation said in the sixth edition of its Diabetes Atlas, noting that deaths from the disease were now running at 5.1 million a year or one every six seconds.

People with diabetes have inadequate blood sugar control, which can lead to a range of dangerous complications, including damage to the eyes, kidneys and heart. If left untreated, it can result in premature death.

“Year after year, the figures seem to be getting worse,” said David Whiting, an epidemiologist and public health specialist at the federation. “All around the world we are seeing increasing numbers of people developing diabetes.”

He said that a strategy involving all parts of society was needed to improve diets and promote healthier lifestyles.

The federation calculates diabetes already accounts for annual healthcare spending of $548 billion and this is likely to rise to $627 billion by 2035.

Worryingly, an estimated 175 million of diabetes cases are as yet undiagnosed, so a huge number of people are progressing towards complications unawares. Most of them live in low- and middle-income countries with far less access to medical care than in the United States and Europe.

The country with the most diabetics overall is China, where the case load is expected to rise to 142.7 million in 2035 from 98.4 million at present.

But the highest prevalence rates are to be found in the Western Pacific, where more than a third of adults in Tokelau, Micronesia and the Marshall Islands already are living with the disease.

Pharmaceutical companies have developed a range of medicines over the years to counter diabetes, but many patients still adequately struggle to control their condition, leading to a continuing hunt for improved treatments.

China has conducted the first test-flight of its J-20 stealth fighter,

Chinese President Hu Jintao has confirmed to US Defence Secretary

The confirmation came after images of the 15-minute flight in

Chengdu appeared on several Chinese websites.

Mr Hu said that the flight had not been timed to coincide with Mr

Gates’ visit, the US defence secretary said.

The US is currently the only nation with a fully operational stealth

plane. But both Russia and China are known to be working on patterns of

stealth fighters, which are invisible to radar.

Mr Gates’ three-day visit to Beijing comes among US concern over the speed at which China’s military is modernising and upgrading its technology.

“I asked President Hu about it directly, and he said that the te st had absolutely nothing to do with my visit and had been a pre-planned test. And that’s where we left it,” Mr Gates was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.

Leaked images of what was said to be China’s J-20 fighter first appeared earlier this month during taxi tests at the Chengdu Aircraft Design Institute. On Tuesday, the plane took off and flew for about 15 minutes, according to

eyewitness accounts published on unofficial Chinese web portals. A video clip of the flight was also posted on the web.China says it expects the stealth plane to be operational some time between 2017 and 2019.

But earlier this month the Pentagon played down concerns over the fighter.

“Developing a stealth capability with a pattern and then integrating that into a fight environment is going to take some time,” said US director of naval intelligence Vice Admiral David Dorsett.

China’s official military budget increased very fast between 1999 and 2009 as the country’s economy grew. In 2010 it stood at $78bn (£50bn).

But the US has by far the largest defence budget in the world at just over $700bn.

Passage3

Many books have been written about China through the eyes of Western authors with observations usually framed by their own cultural background. But Harvard University student John Thornton approaches the country from a different perspective, unburdened with adult values.

In his first novel, Beautiful Country, the author describes the country and its culture through the eyes of a 14-year-old American boy called Chase. It depicts the protagonist's experiences as he witnesses how a talented young Chinese tennis player becomes caught between the country's old and new values, between following the rules and bending those that inhibit his development as a player. Interwoven are Chase's feelings and insights about Chinese culture and social phenomena.

"I think children see the world in a pure and unfiltered way. Their minds are free from preconceived biases and impressions, so they can see things in a very unique way," he says.

Born in London, Thornton, now 22, came to Beijing when he was 14 to spend a year studying Chinese and training with the Beijing junior tennis team. As an avid writer, he kept journals during his stay that later became resources for his novel.

"Prior to coming to China, I had a very limited knowledge of the country," he says. "But the year I spent in Beijing really opened my eyes and I saw what a fascinating and complex and rapidly evolving country China is."

The Chinese version of Beautiful Country was released in May.

Thornton says that what impressed him most about China was young people's persistence. Even though the talented Chinese player he depicts becomes a day laborer when the story ends, he says that "the keynote is still positive, because he is still young and he won't give up easily".

That is also why he named the book Beautiful Country, as it is a place with hope and people that never give up, he says.

The crisis at the damaged Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power

Station in northern Japan has raised worries about radiation risks.

Jonathan Links, an expert in radiation health sciences at the Johns

Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Maryland, says workers

within the nuclear plant are the only people at risk of extremely high

doses of radiation(辐射量).

“Of course, we don’t know what doses they’ve received, but the

only persons at risk of strong radiation effects are the workers.” For

other people, he says, there may be a long-term worry. People can get cancer from low doses of ionizing(电离) radiation, the kind given out in a nuclear accident.

Professor Links says scientists can use computers to quickly model where radioactive material has blown and settled. Then they measure how large an area is polluted. He says if the situation is serious enough, officials could take steps like telling people not to eat locally grown food or drink the water.

The reactors at Fukushima are on the Pacific coast. But Professor Links says people should not worry about any radioactive material coming into the ocean. “Even in a worst-case accident, the sea provides a very high degree of dilution(稀释). So the concentration of radioactivity in the seawater would still be quite low.”

Next month is the 25th anniversary(周年) of the explosion and fire that destroyed a reactor at Chernobyl in Ukraine. The 1986 event was t he world’s worst accident in the nuclear power industry.

A new United Nations report says more than 6,000 cases of thyroid(甲状腺) cancer have been found. These are in people who were children in affected areas of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. The report says that by 2005 the cancers had resulted in 15 deaths.

The cancers were largely caused by drinking polluted milk, which came from cows that ate grass where radioactive material had fallen.

A. people are too far away to be affected

B. they are of very small amount compared with the vast ocean

C. the ocean can break down the radioactive materials

D. they won’t pollute the seawater

3. What can be the best title of the passage?

BARCELONA, Spain - China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, one of the nation's leading State-owned enterprises, has been putting major effort into developing "smart city" solutions for Chinese cities in recent years.

The company has undertaken a "smart city design" for the Chinese cities of Wuhan, Hangzhou, Shenyang and Shaoxing, and over 20 other cities have contacted CASIC and shown interest in a similar design, according to Wang Jian, vice director of the Civil Industry Developing Dept, The Second Academy of the CASIC.

Wang, who is attending the 2012 Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, told https://www.doczj.com/doc/0b8957485.html, that the company also has projects in Pakistan and Myanmar. It also hopes to become the supplier of the security system for the Brazil Olympics.

The company, boasting a strong tradition in the military industry, has also been successful after entering the civil sector. It has offered security systems for big events including the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

CASIC later realized that cities also have the need for security systems, prompting the company to look at the larger picture – a smart city. Factors including traffic, medical care and infrastructure were considered for a "smart city" that makes urban life more convenient.

In 2011, the city of Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei province, launched an open tender to companies globally for a smart city solution, and CASIC won the bid.

"We stand on the point of the government and help them find out what they really want."

"In our opinion, a smart city consists of three dimensions: first, citizens will lead a more comfortable and harmonious life; second, enterprises will enjoy a better business environment and third the governance of the city will be more efficient,"Wang said.

Efforts to make cities more suitable for living has never ceased, but a "smart city" is a comparatively new concept, emerging only after great progress in information technologies such as the Internet of Things and cloud computing. There have been 154 Chinese cities which have expressed a plan to "go smart," according to a survey by the China Communications Industry Association under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.China is in the process of great urbanization and the market potential for developing a smart city is huge, said Yu Jie, vice secretary general of the Internet of Things under the CCIA.

The company was recognized as the best low-carbon performer at the Third International Carbon-Value Awards initiated by the UN Industrial Development Organization and the International Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Association, or IEEPA.

The green trend is irreversible, yet the road ahead is bumpy. "We have to subject the companies as the major economic players to market forces and let the fittest survive," said He Keng, former deputy head of the National Bureau of Statistics

Passage13

A Rewarding Experience

Last May, my wife and I returned from a month-long visit to Shanghai, Beijing and a number of other cities in China. It was a rewarding experience to see this vast country on its forward march. China recently overtook the United States as the world's largest market for car manufacturers, and indeed it seemed to me that the country's highways were packed with the latest models.

While the United States and other Western countries slowly recover from the Great Recession, China is growing at an amazing rate of 9.5 percent.

I witnessed China's industrial might while visiting Shanghai's huge container port – the world's largest. As far as the eye could see, a forest of red cranes起重机was loading and unloading containers with robotic precision. It was an amazing display of China's industrial clout影响力;势力. China has also overtaken America as the world's greatest trading nation, and this was obvious to me in Shanghai. In fact, China is now bankrolling America's trillion-dollar

budget deficit.赤字

I also found Beijing to be a thriving city. Its ancient and modern buildings represent China's great historical past and promising future. Strolling around the Forbidden City is like stepping back in time, while visiting the Olympic stadium is glimpsing the future. Both and Beijing represent China's glorious former days, its shinning, ambitious present and its even brighter future.

I fell in love with the ancient city of Suzhou, known as China's Venice. It is truly a charming city worth discovering. We enjoyed a good cup of tea and Pingtan (traditional Suzhou entertainment) performances in our lovely hotel. We felt and touched ancient China in the hotel, with its latticed装有格子的windows and winding canal pathways, and tranquil. There is no better way to acquaint oneself with China's elegant charm than to relax in these green oases. We had a fantastic time on our trip to China. The only thing we would like to see changed in the country is a reduction in the levels of pollution in Beijing and Shanghai.

Passage14

Lessons from Antarctica

My early knowledge of Antarctica was simply that it differs from the North Pole, which is largely a body of

water covered in snow and ice for most of the year. The South Pole, in contrast, has a large land territory – 13.9 million square kilometers – that constitutes a cornucopia(丰富,富饶)of natural resources and wildlife.

Antarctic temperatures, at an average -500 to -600 Celsius throughout the year, are so low that the snow never melts in some parts of the continent. It is the coldest place on earth. Because we were visiting during the (relatively) warm season, we were witness to thundering snow slides down rolling mountains, brash ice, and massive drifting icebergs in all formations(形状)imaginable. This vista was particularly striking at the Lemaire Strait, known as the iceberg cemetery.(墓地)

I boarded an expedition ship along with a team of scientists with the intent of exploring this spectacular Antarctic Peninsula. It was as distant from the familiar as possible, and one of the most exciting adventures one can have. The feathers of penguins gleamed in the sun, while several species of whales gathered at the bow of our vessel(ship) to feast on krill(南极虾)as hordes(群体)of gray gulls cawed(呱呱叫)hungrily overhead.

In the company of our guides, I went to a shore brimming with varied species of wildlife going about their daily lives, with instructions to maintain a five-meter distance from them. We were cautioned repeatedly that the only things we could take away from the visit were photos and memories, and that all we could leave behind was our footprints. Even picking a blade(叶片)of grass or a pebble(鹅卵石)was prohibited.

The blue sky, snow-blanketed mountains and white clouds over the shining sea entranced and fascinated us. It is hard to believe that this land of overwhelming(压倒性的)beauty and peace was a center of argument in the early 20th century. Nine countries scrambled for it, and poachers(偷猎者)streamed in, leaving behind bloody killing fields littered with a great many of countless killed penguins, whales and sea lions.

In recognizing that the interests of united humankind are foremost主要的, the Antarctic Treaty drafted during the Cold War between the U.S. and the Soviet Union proved that common interests could unite countries with different claims but with a common goal. When the treaty was renewed in 1991 for another 50 years, experts actually expressed confidence that it would last forever. The world has seen remarkable changes since the Cold War period, not least the growing scope of common interests that empowers(给---权力)countries to reach far more agreements than decades ago.
