The dinner is usually served at home, sometimes at a restaurant. You should get there on time, and don’t forget to put on your fine clothes. Today anyone will accept money in exchange for goods and services. People use money to buy food, furniture, books, bicycles and hundreds of other things they need or want. When they work, they usually get paid in money.

Lots of the money today is made of paper. But people used to use all kinds of things as money. One of the first kinds of money was shells. Shells were not the only things used as money.

A few years ago, I took a sightseeing trip to Washington D.C. I saw many of our nation’s treasures, and I also saw a lot of unfortunate people like beggars and homeless folks in the streets.

Standing outside the Ronald Reagan Center, I heard a voice say, ‘Can you help me?’ When I turned around, I saw an elderly blind woman with her hand extended(伸出). In a natural reaction, I reached into my pocket, pulled out all of my change and placed it in her hand. I didn’t even look at her. I was annoyed at being bothered by a beggar.

But the blind woman smiled and said, ‘I don’t want your money. I just nee d help finding the post office.’

Immediately, I realized what I had done. I acted with prejudice(偏见)—I judged another person simply for what I thought she was.

The thing I had forgotten about myself is that I am an immigrant(移民). I left China and arrived in America at the age of 15. Through the years, I have been a dishwasher, cashier, mechanic and pizza delivery driver among many other jobs, and finally I became a network engineer.

In my own life, I have experienced many open acts of prejudice. I remember a time, at age 17— I was a busboy(餐馆工), and I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well at school, he would end up like me.

But now, living in my American middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget my past, to forget who I am and where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to be going. That blind woman on the street of Washington D.C. cured me of my blindness. She reminded me to always keep my eyes and heart open.

66. When the author came to America at first ______.

A. he usually did some work with a little payment(报酬).

B. he used to beg for some money on the street.

C. he lived a comfortable life as a network engineer.

D. he was respected by others all the time.

67. According to the passage, what did the author regret?

A. He gave all his change to the blind woman.

B. The way he treated the blind woman.

C. That he came to Washington

D.C. for a visit.

D. That he didn’t tell the woman the way to the post office.

68. The father mentioned in paragraph 6 wanted ______.

A. to encourage his son to make a living by himself

B. his son to become a busboy in the future

C. his son to work harder at school

D. to remind his son to depend on himself at school

69. We can infer all of the following statements from the passage EXCEPT ______.

A. He disliked being bothered by beggars.

B. He was pleased to give his money to beggars.

C. He once suffered a lot.

D. The blind woman didn’t beg for money at that time.

70. What does the author want to tell us through this story?

A. Don’t dream up ways to get what you want.

B. Money is the root of all evils (万恶之源).

C. An easy life makes a person forgetful.

D. Be good to others all the time.

Part IV Writing(45 marks)

Section A (10 marks)

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

How to stop shopping? Sophie Kinsella, a best-selling writer, tells you how to keep your shopping desire under control.

● For many women the desire to stop will never disappear. I' m not saying never buy anything ever, but make sure what you buy really benefits your life.

● If you have been shopping crazily for ten years, it' s unrealistic to stop it completely, but try to slow the pace. Go to the shops, walk around and enjoy the whole experience instead of buying an expensive purse.

● Look at what you spend each month and make a budget (预算), or go out carrying really heavy bags, then you simply won't be able to carry anything else.

● Be a wise shopper. Look in your closet and make a list of what you actually need. If you have five pairs of red shoes, do you need another pair? If you were wondering, the answer is "NO".

● Shopping with friends is a good choice. Helping your friends find something nice can bring you the same excitement as shopping for yourself. It is also a way to improve

friendship.

● Rediscover your money boxes and enjoy the pleasure of saving up. I gave my friends money boxes with slogans(标语) such as "Shoe fund" and "Shipping fund" on them.

● I do shop online, but I don' t think it could ever take the place of the real shopping. For me shopping is about the experience of stores and the touching of cloth, which you can' t do when clicking through web pages.

● Before you buy anything, slow down, stop and think. Go and have a cup of coffee if necessary.

Section B(10 marks)

Directions: Read the following passages. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.

I have a friend who had financial(经济上的)problems and needed my help occasionally. He was in his final year in university while I was in my third year. He needed some money for school fees and other academic purposes(目的),and he came to me. Being a student,I didn't have much money, but I gave him what he needed on the agreement that he would pay back. I didn't bother him after that. I never asked when he'd pay back.

Later on,after he finished school,he got into another period of deep financial stress and called me on the phone. He asked to borrow some more money, promising that he'd pay all of it back once he landed a job. Out of kindness,I still gave him the exact amount he needed, which was twice the amount I had given him initially.

He was so grateful. It's so hard to find someone willing to lend you that amount of money, even with interest.

One evening after a few months,I was feeling happy and love filled my heart.

I felt like performing a special act of kindness. And then I thought,“Why not cancel my friend's debt? Things are so difficult for him,you know?”So I called him up and told him I had canceled his debt. He was shocked! He couldn't believe it. He was so happy and later sent me a message of thanks. Me too! And I felt grateful for his gratitude.

In life,it is the small but powerful actions of love that matter. When life is over, that's what counts.
