Passage A

(2019中考选练)

Good morning, class!

We know that there are too many net bars around us. The Internet is popular and it

makes our lives colorful. Many of us like going online very much because we can learn

how to use the computer and get more information from the Internet. We can learn

English. We can read some good newspapers and magazines. It can make us clever in

playing computer games. We can send E-mails to our friends quickly. We can chat(

天) freely online with our friends. It can help us get in touch with people from all over

the world.

But some students spend too much time in playing computer game and some stay

in the net bars all day and all night. Teenagers even get to have boyfriends or

girlfriends online. They write too many letters to each other. It takes them to much time

to chat online so they do worse and worse in their lessons and they don’t study we any more. I think we mustn’t get online when it is time for us to study. We can do it in

summer or winter holidays. We should get online with adults(成人)--our teacher or

parents.

At the same time, if we have lots of free time, we can do some out-of-class

activities at school. We usually have activities from 4:50 to 5:50 in the afternoon. We

have different kinds of activities. If you are interested in sports, you can play basketball

or football. We can go to the English Corner. We can practice talking in English there.

We hope we can spend more time on our subjects or on such activities that we can

learn a lot from and less time on the Internet.

Thank you for listening to me.That’s all.

For most people, the word “fashion” means “clothes”. But people may ask the question, “What clothes are in fashion?” And they use the adjective “fashionable the same way:

“She was wearing a fashionable coat. His shirt was really a fashionable colour.

But of course there are fashions in many things, not only in clothes. There are

fashions in holidays, in restaurants, in films and books. There are even fashions in

school subjects, jobs…and in languages.

Fashions change as time goes. If you look at pictures of people or things from the past, you will see that fashions have always changed. An English house of 1750 was different from one of 1650. A fashionable man in 1780 looked very different from his grandson in 1860.

Today fashions change very quickly. Some of this is natural. We hear about things much more quickly than in the past. Newspaper, radios, telephones and television send information from one country to another in a few hours.

New fashions mean that people will buy new things, so you see there is money in fashion.

It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying

jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with

ake people get

little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to m

jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people.

Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get

education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of

education. In fact, if educa tion is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time.

Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and mathematics need not be taught in detail(详细地), either. Here it is clear that education

is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.

Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to

teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other

abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the

achievements of humans. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated

people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays

and most of all take an interest in the world.

I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but

certainly not the most important or the main reason.

1. People with little education usually _______.

A. spend a long time in school

B. have a good chance to get a job

C. spend the best years to choose jobs

D. have a smaller chance to get a

good job

2. The earliest education was probably to _______.

A. make a man lead a better life

B. teach a man to write and think

C. make people get a way of living

D. teach people to read good

books

-rounded” in the passage means “_______” in

3. The underlined word “well

Chinese.

A. 圆满的

B. 崭新的

C. 公平的

D. 全面的

4. It is expected that educated people will be able to _______.

A. accept education as a way of living

B. take an interest in the whole

world

C. develop their abilities to make plays

D. learn subjects like language and math

5. The passage mainly tells us that _______.

A. education should make a man improve

My father was German, but he Worked in England. He married my mother, who

was English. Her family name was Robinson, so when I was born in632, in England,

they called me Robinson, after her.

My father did well in his business and I went to a good school. He wanted me to

get a good job, and live a quiet, pleasant life. But I wanted adventure and an exciting life.

“I want to be a sailor and go to sea", I told my mother and father. They were very unhappy about this.

“Please don’t go. "my father said, "You won't be happy you know. Sailors have a difficult and dangerous life. "and because I love him, and he was unhappy, I tried to forget about the sea.

But I couldn't forget, and about a year later, I saw a friend in town. His father had

a Ship and my friend said to me,” we are sailing to London tomorrow. Why don’t y come with us.”

On September 1", 1651, I went to Hull and the next day we sailed for London.

But, a few days later, there was a strong wind. The sea was rough and dangerous,

and the ship went up and down up and down. I was very ill, and was very afraid.

“Oh, I don't want to die!” I cried,“ I want to live! If I live, I will go home and

never go to sea again!”

The next day the wind stopped, and the sea was quiet and beautiful again.

Well, Robinson, my friend laughed," How do you feel now? The wind wasn't to

bad.”

“What!" I cried. "It was a terrible storm.”

“Oh, that wasn't a storm, "my friend answered, "just a little wind. Forget it, come

and have a d rink.”

After a few drinks with my friend, I felt better. I forgot about the danger, and

decided not to go home. I didn’t want my friend and family to laugh at me!

I stayed in London for some time, but I still, wanted to go to the sea. So, when the

captain(船长)of a ship ask me to go with him to Guinea in Africa, I agreed, And so I

went to the sea for the second time.

It was a good ship, and everything went well at first, but I was very ill again. Then

when we were near the Canary Islands, a Turkish pirate(海盗)ship came after us. They

were famous thieves of the sea at that time. There was a long, hard fight, but when it

finished, we and the ship were prisoners. The Turkish captain and his men took us to

Sallee in Morocco. They wanted to sell us as slaves(奴隶)in the market. But in the end,

the Turkish captain decided to keep me for himself, and took me home with him. This

was a sudden and terrible change in my life. This Turkish captain was now my master.
