Runners in a relay race pass a stick in one direction. However, merchants passed silk, gold, fruit, and glass along the Silk Road in more than one direction. They earned their living by traveling the famous Silk Road.

The Silk Road was not a simple trading network. It passed through thousands of cities and towns. It started from eastern China, across Central Asia and the Middle East, and ended in the Mediterranean Sea. It was used from about 200 B.C. to about A.D. 1300, when sea travel offered new routes. It was sometimes called the world’s longest highway. However, the S ilk Road was made up of many routes, not one smooth path. They passed through what are now 18 countries. The routes crossed mountains and deserts and had many dangers of hot sun, deep snow and even battles. Only experienced traders could return safe.

The Silk Road got its name from its most prized product. Silk could be used like money to pay taxes or buy goods. But the traders carried more than just silk. Gold, silver, and glass from Europe were much found in the Middle East and Asia. Horses traded from other areas changed farming practices in China. Indian merchants traded salt and other valuable goods. Chinese merchants traded paper, which produced an immediate effect on the W est. Apples traveled from central Asia to Rome. The Chinese had learned to graft (to join a part of a plant or tree onto another plant or tree) different trees together to make new kinds of fruit. They passed this science on to others, including the Romans. The Romans used grafting to grow the apple. Trading along the Silk Road led to worldwide business 2,000 years before the W orld Wide W eb.

member of the research team. “They’re expected to be rebellious and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds; they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There’s more negotiation and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don’t want to rock the boat.”

So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends. “My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me,” says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall. “I always tell them when I’m going out clubbin g. As long as they know what I’m doing, they’re fine with it.” Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees. “Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. I first went to Harrow in the summer term. The school had the biggest swimming pool I had ever seen. It was a good joke to come up behind a naked boy, and push him into the pool. I made quite a habit of this with boys of my own size or less.

One day I saw a boy wrapped in a towel on the side of the pool. He was no bigger than I was, so I thought him a fair game. Coming secretly behind, I pushed him in, holding on to his towel so that it would not get wet. I was surprised to see an angry face come out from the water, and a being of great strength making its way by face strokes to the shore. I fled, but in vain. He overtook me, seized me violently, and threw me into the deepest part of the pool. I soon climbed out on the other side, and found myself surrounded by a crowd of yo unger boys. “Do you know what you have done?” they said. “It’s Amery; he is in Grade Six. He is champion at gym; he has got his football honor.”

I was frightened and felt ashamed. How could I tell his position when he was wrapped in a bath towel and so small. He didn’t seem pleased at all, so I added in a most brilliant word, “My father, who is a great man, is also small.” At this he laughed, and after some general words about my rude behavior and how I had better be careful in the future, signified the incident was closed. So you’d better notify the coastguard, and keep an eye on the private airfields. M: Right, ma’am. I’d better get his description circulated. W: Y es. He may change his appearance, of course. And John — be careful. He could be armed. And if I know Hammond, he certainly won’t give himself up without a fight. Questions 19 to 22 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

M: Do I just have to fill out an application? W: Y ou have to have an interview with the homeowner and provide three references at least. M: T hat seems a lot of trouble for a summer job.

W: W ell, the homeowner wants some guarantee that they can trust the house-sitter. Y ou know they want to make sure you’re not the type who’ll hold wild parties in their house, or bring a group of friends in with you.

M: I see. House-sitters who do that sort of thing probably aren’t paid then. W: Usually they’re paid anyway just because the homeowners don’t want to make a fuss. Section B

The Food and Drug Administration is, again, threatening to impose milk and meat from cloned animals on a public that opposes the technology and its products. Respected polls report that more than 60% of Americans think animal cloning is immoral, and that most people said they wouldn’t knowingly eat the products even if the FDA approved them. But because the FDA would allow cloned meat and milk to be sold without identifying labels, consumers wouldn’t be able to avoid them. The FDA has consistently tilted toward those who want cloned milk and meat in our food. Agency officials have repeatedly asserted that science shows cloned milk and meat are

safe for humans. But the FDA has never published the complete scientific studies it says support that claim.

The argument that cloning is safe for animals is unconvincing. Cloned meat and milk offer no public economic benefits. Having cloned cows produce more milk wouldn’t Questions 26 to 29 are based on the passage you have just heard.

reduce milk prices. U.S. farmers produce more milk than we

drink, and the government is required to buy the surplus. Since

2000, dairy support programs have cost taxpayers more than $5

billion.

Most important, this first decision to advance animal

biotechnology raises ethical issues beyond the FDA ’s expertise.

T echniques used to clone animals will advance the ability to clone

humans — and create animals with human genes. Neither the

agency nor animal scientists are qualified to tell us whether and

when it is ethically acceptable for humans to alter the essential

nature of animals. W e need a national discussion, including

ethicists and religious leaders, to consider the wisdom of cloned

and transgenic animals. Given the risk of unintended

consequences, we should proceed cautiously . The president

should halt further FDA action on cloning and set in motion a

process for beginning this broader discussion.

China began work on one of the world’s longest bridges in Zhejiang Province On June 8. The 36km bridge over Hangzhou Bay will cut the journey between Ningbo and Shanghai by 120kms. The construction work is expected to be finished in five years and the bridge will open for traffic in 2009. The project will cost 11.8 billion yuan and is thought to last 100 years. One of the first questions anybody asks about a new-born is “what is the baby’s name?” Faced with this tiny pink new -born, Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

33. What do we often do with the things we love?

we want to put a name to it, as if by doing so, we welcome it to this world of individuals. W e always name the things we love. A small child will give names to even his tiniest toys or his well-chewed blanket. And the difference between “blankie” and the blanket is an entire personality.

There are many ways to choose a name for a baby. One of the most common is to use an old family name. If the family tie is strong enough, parents are often willing to overlook an unpleasant feeling or meaning. If all the men for five generations have been named Branden, who are you to complain that the name means “smelly hair”? Inspiration need not be limited to the fami ly tree. Pick an attribute, or pick the name of an Italian city where the baby was born. Name the baby after your favorite poet or interesting scent. It can be difficult to find a perfect name for your baby. But the beauty of the process is this. By the time the baby is a few months old, his personality erases all other associations the name may hold, the evil snake or the much-loved poet fades away and the name becomes quite simply the name of your child. And you will have made the right choice. W e always name the things we love,可知答案为[D]。

America is a country on the move. In unheard of numbers, people of all ages are exercising their way to better health. According to the latest figures, 59 percent of American adults exercise regularly, up 12 percent from just two years ago and more than double the figure of 25 years ago. Even non-exercisers believe they would be more attractive and confident if they were more active.

It is not hard to get the message. The virtues of physical fitness are shown on magazine covers, postage stamps, and television ads for everything from beauty soaps to travel books. Exercise as a part of daily life did not catch on until the late 1960s when research by military doctors began to show the health benefits of doing regular physical exercise. Growing publicity for races held in American cities helped fuel a strong interest in the ancient sport of running.

Although running has levelled off in recent years as Americans have discovered equally rewarding and sometimes safer forms of exercise, such as walking and swimming, running remains the most popular form of exercise.

As the popularity of exercise continues to mount, so does scientific evidence of its health benefits. The key to fitness is exercising the major muscle groups vigorously enough to approximately double the heart rate and keep it doubled for 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Doing such physical exercises three or more times a week will produce considerable improvements in physical health in about three months. Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard.

26. According to the passage, what was the percentage of American adults doing regular physical exercises two years ago?

27. What can be learnt about the health benefits of exercise from

the passage?

短文中提到,…research…show the health benefit of doing regular physical exercises,由此可知,答案为[D],其中的are supported by scientific evidence是对短文中research…show 的同义转述。

28. Which would be the best title for the passage?

A study published in September suggests there is a surprising way to get people to avoid unhealthy foods: change their memories. Scientist Elizabeth Loftus of the University of California at Irvine asked volunteers to answer some questions on their personalities and food experiences. “One week later,” Loftus says, “we told those people we’d fed their answers into our smart computer and it came up with an account of their early childhood experiences.” Some accounts included one key additional detail —“Y ou got sick after eating strawberry ice-cream.” The researchers then changed this detail into a manufactured memory through leading questions — Who were you with? How did you feel? By the end of the study, up to 41% of those given a false memory believed strawberry ice-cream once made them sick, and many said they’d avoid ea ting it.

When Loftus published her findings, she started getting calls Questions 29 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard.

29. Why did Loftus ask the volunteers to answer some questions? 由短文中Loftus所说的“One W eek Later,”和“we told those people we’d fed their answers into…computer…”

【点睛】feed sth. into a computer意为“将…输入到计算机中”。

30. What did Loftus find out from her research?

from people begging her to make them remember hating chocolate or French fries. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. False memories appear to work only for foods you don’t eat on a regular basis. But most important, it is likely that false memories can be implanted only in people who are unaware of the mental control. And lying to a patient is immoral, even if a doctor believes it’s for the patient’s benefit.

Loftus says there’s nothing to stop parents from trying it with their overweight children. “I say, wake up — parents have been lying about Father Christmas for years, and nobody seems to mind. If they can prevent diseases caused by fatness and all the other problems that come with th at, you might think that’s a more moral lie. Decide that for yourself.”

31. According to the study, under what circumstances may people stop having a certain food?

【解析】选[D]。分析选项可知,此处的it指代的应该是food,该研究的结果是:41%的人都相信,在他们的记忆当中,ice-cream once made them sick,并表示they’d avoid eating,[D]是对此的抽象概括,故为答案。

【点睛】[D]中的think对应短文中的believed; bad experience 对应made them sick。

32. What is the biggest concern with the method?

【解析】选[A]。短文中提到,这种方法的缺点之一就是lying to a patient is immoral,而Loftus则举例辩解说,这种方法是a more moral lie,可见人们最关心的是这种方法是否道德,故答案为[A]。

For centuries man dreamed of achieving vertical flight. The ancient dream was finally realized in 1940 when a Russian engineer piloted a strange-looking craft of steel tubing with a rotating fan on top. It rose awkwardly and vertically into the air from a standing start, hovered a few feet above the ground, went sideways and backwards, and then settled back to earth. The vehicle was called a helicopter.

Imaginations were fired. Man dreamed of going to work in their own personal helicopters. People anticipated that vertical flight transports would carry millions of passengers as the airliners of today do. Such fantastic expectations were not fulfilled.

The helicopter has now become an extremely useful machine. It excels in military missions, carrying troops, guns and strategic instruments where other aircraft cannot go. Corporations use them as airborne offices, many metropolitan areas use them in police work, construction and logging companies employ them in various advantageous ways, engineers use them for site selection and surveying, and oil companies use them as the best way to make offshore and remote work stations accessible to crews and supplies. Any urgent mission to a hard-to-get-to place is a likely task for a helicopter. Among their other multitude of uses they deliver people across town, fly to and from airports, assist in rescue work, and aid in the search for missing or wanted persons. Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.
